This. I wouldn't say he's a traditional superhero, because of the whole "pacifism and science" angle, but he's not that different from someone like the Phantom Stranger.
>>
>>68074054

Punisher doesn't wear masks, that guy is holding his in his hand, therefore, he's daredevil.

Wasn't travolta punisher in the movie?

>m8, he's been one since atleast Pertwee
Almost 10 years into the show is hardly "literally is and always has been a superhero". That sort of interpretation of the character was no doubt debuted before then though. But it doesn't make it THE interpretation of the character. It's not the fundamental core of Doctor Who. If anything it's a distortion of the show (but so prevalent now that it's become a significant part of it)

>>68073994
>Having semi-immortality and time travel does the trick.
You need more than that to qualify as a "super hero", otherwise that would make the Master a superhero too which they obviously are not. It's about motivation, and even stylistic/aesthetic choices. The Doctor scaring off the baddy at the end of The Eleventh Hour is a superhero moment. The Doctor sabotaging his own ship so that he has an excuse to explore an alien city is not.
>>
>>68074248
The Master is a supervillain.
>>
>>68074248
>"There are some corners of the universe which have bred the most terrible things. Things which act against everything that we believe in. They must be fought." -The Moonbase, episode 2
>>
Basically there are two ways people write the Doctor and they can be summed up as:

>Primarily, the Doctor wants to see the Universe

and

>Primarily, the Doctor wants to save the Universe

The latter is the "superhero" version of the character/show. I personally find the former more interesting.
>>
>>68073760
Useful shorthand for American populist blockbuster popcorn movie following relatively non-confrontational house style and revolving around spectacle. With respect to the movies specifically, they exhibit a sheen of Hollywood 'cool'ness in both drama and humour, that wouldn't suit an odd fish like Doctor Who (which is almost reliant on a certain wilful uncoolness to get away with the highly idiosyncratic things it does, and the fact it's better at talking than action).
>>
>>68074335
Yeah, that's pretty much where it started.

I'd argue it has been a fundamental part of the character since mid Hartnell era. It's part of what his character development leads to, and by the time he's fighting against the Daleks' Masterplan he's looking pretty superheroic.

Well, it always involves both to a degree. The "primarily" is the key point though. The Doctor loves seeing alien civilisation and culture but he can't just stand idly by when he sees injustice in those worlds either. He always gets involved.

I don't think anyone has ever written a Doctor who was outright more interested in the act of saving the universe than seeing it, not even VNAs' 7. His desire to save people comes out of his desire to experience the universe, his fundamental interest in the validity of life in all its forms. The two are not in conflict.

>Tooth and Claw
Tooth and Claw is a reference to the saying "nature is red in tooth and claw" meaning animals fucking kill each other a lot. The werewolf is just a predator/parasite doing what it does to survive, the Doctor even considers it beautiful, but it still needs to be stopped to protect other life.

>Fear Her
Is about a girl with fearsome powers.

A reference to the Da Vinci Code. Remember when that was a thing?

>The Unicorn and the Wasp
One of the characters has the alias The Unicorn and another is literally a giant wasp.

>Forest of the Dead
The library is full of paper which is made from dead trees. It is a forest of the dead.

What's everyone's opinions on the more unique episode titles in NuWho especially in the Moffat era?
Like normally classic who and RTD era nu were "The Terror/Death/Doom/Planet of Terror/Death/Doom" but now we have "Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS", "Listen", "Death in Heaven", and the pottery-like titles of series 9 such as "Under the Lake; Before the Flood"
>>
>>68083127

I like them both. I can't say I prefer one over the other.

Although if it's a Dalek episode, it must be titled "XYZ of the Daleks". It's almost a tradition now.
>>
>>68083127
at least they tend not to spoil the episodes
>robots of death
>attack of the cybermen

oh there was Dalek I guess
>>
>>68083666
I don't think they are spoiling. Lots of stories show their middles in the beginning and title like this is just rudimentary In Medias Res.
>>
>>68083127
Series 9 had god-tier titles due to all the two-parters whose titles play off each other, something that puzzlingly hasn't been done much with two-parters before. Other than that I don't see a big difference between Moffat and RTD era titles, there's lots of RTD titles similar to your examples. Just to pick from RTD's episodes, we have Love & Monsters, Turn Left, The Sound of Drums, Midnight, etc.

Classic titles are usually more literally descriptive (not always, because the new series does have things like "Dalek" and "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship") but also hype the episodes up more. Whereas new series titles try to entice the viewer by having a certain mystique, classic titles tend to just throw a bunch of thrilling-sounding words in there and ideally a monster name that sounds cool. It's kind of charming the way the earnest straightforwardness of most old scifi tv and movies always is.
>>
>>68083732

INT PARLOR

A MAN is on camera, warning those watching his video.

MAN:
Danger! This is a warning. A warning to the whole world. You're looking for Wi-Fi. And sometimes you see something... a bit like this. (holds up a sign bearing foreign symbols) Don't click it. Do. Not. Click. It.

We see people clicking on the symbols when looking for Wi-Fi.

MAN:
Once you've clicked it, they're in your computer. They can see you. And if they can see you, they might choose you. And if they do... you die. Within 24 hours, you're dead.

We see some of the people who clicked on the symbols sprawled out on the ground or in their seats.

MAN:
For a while. People's souls are being uploaded to the internet. Some people get stuck. Their minds, their
souls, trapped in the Wi-Fi. Like echoes. Like ghosts.

Faintly, we hear overlapping voices.

VOICES:
I don't know where I am! I don't know where I am! (repeated)

MAN:
Sometimes you can hear their screams. On the radio. On the telly. On the net.

VOICES:
I don't know where I am! I don't know where I am! (repeated)

MAN:
This is real. This is not a hoax.

AMERICAN MAN:
(into camera) I, I don't know where I am!

MAN:
Or a joke.

JAPANESE WOMAN:
(into camera) Doko?

MAN:
Or a story.

MAN 2:
(into camera) I don't know where I am!

MAN:
This is real and I know that, because... (voice breaks) I don't know where I am. Please, if you can hear me... If you can hear me, I don't know where I am.

The camera pulls out and we see the MAN is one of hundreds as we see a wall lined with monitors, each person pleading for help, not knowing where they are.

(Over images of people connecting to a red wifi linking the whole planet, via desktops, laptops, phones, etc. is a man on a staticky screen.)
NABILE: Danger. This is a warning. A warning to the whole world. You're looking for wifi. Sometimes you see something.
(He holds up a card with seven strange symbols.)
NABILE: A bit like this. Don't click it. Do not click it. Once you've clicked it, they're in your computer.
(A whole slew of weird symbols in the available connections list.)
NABILE: They can see you. And they can see you, they might choose you. And if they do, you die. For twenty four hours, you're dead. For a while. People's souls are being uploaded to the internet. And some people get stuck. Their minds, their souls, in the wifi. Like echoes, like ghosts. Sometimes you can hear their screams on the radio, on the telly, on the net. This is real. This is not a hoax.
MAN 2 [on screen]: I don't know where I am.
NABILE: Or a joke.
(A Japanese woman on a laptop screen.)
NABILE: Or a story.
MAN 3 [on screen]: I don't know where I am.
NABILE: This is real, and I know that, because I don't know where I am. Please, please, if you can hear me, if you can hear me, I don't know where I am.

I have and I just don't get it, why is it the power of three when the it's The Doctor, Amy, Rory and Brian who save the day?
>>
>>68085470
3 to the power of three is 27
>>
>>68085553
What's that got to do with it? 27 sides to the cubes or something?

Because cubes

In mathematics when something is squared it's to the power of two, when it's cubes it's to the power of three
>>
>>68086441
So the title is about the cubes? So like the power of the cubes to destroy mankind?
>>
>>68086531
Fucking hell, no, it's about Amy, Rory, and the Doctor, you know, the three of them, and how they're powerful working together as a group god DAMN it they explain it at the end just watch the end
>>
Why is it called 'City of Death'? I thought it should have been called 'Paris when it (Time)splits'
>>
>>68086531

It's a clever little play on words
"power of three" refers to the third exponential in maths which is used to cube things
the title also refers to the power of doc, amy and rory - the 'three'
>>
>>68086531
No no no, it's a doublepun, it refers to both the mathematical power of three represented by the presence of the cubes and the power of three represented by 11, Amy and Rory working together as a team
>>
>>68086594
Because it's set in a famous city and a ton of 4 stories end in "of Death"

Why is it called Doctor Who the TV Movie? Doctor Who is almost always on TV, and this is shorter than most old Who stories and many new Who stories. Also, he never fights a character called the TV Movie, so what gives?
>>

Blame the americans
>>
>>68087059
That is not a 4 story
>>
>>68087187

Only fans call it that. The official name is just 'Doctor Who'.

I remember hearing somewhere that the name for the story was "The Enemy Within", which also doesn't make sense,.

Hang on so what do the cubes have to do with it? Cubes have 6 sides? I understand that Amy, Rory, and The Doctor help UNIT get rid of the cubes, so is it something to do with that? The power of UNIT to get the cubes out of harm's way?

>ywn get to go to a filming location and meet Peter Capaldi

This really depresses me, I'm not even memeing.
>>
>>68088381

It ends on a completely different chord and takes out the final resolution notes, leaving it to lead directly into the next part of the melody instead of acting self contained

When they broadcasted it in France for the 50th anniversary they titled it "Paris is going to die", which is much shittier.
