This was a perfect opportunity to seriously examine the Superman character. Let's say Lex had stayed in the courtroom, and on the bomb triggering, Supes saved every single person in there, including Lex, except the bomber. He would then display irredeemable guilt over the bomber dying, despite the fact he wanted to die and could not have been saved. This would have been the best portrayale of Superman possible, as that regardless of his power it shows he can't save everyone, but yet he still believes he should.
