It has its issues, but it succeeds as a thematic capstone. Luke's character arc, Vader, the Emperor, the space battle, the Tatooine sequence, are all great or good. It's a very clumsy movie, but it works on a level that TFA never does save for maybe Kylo Ren. TFA is very competently assembled but it's boring most of the time.
I've watched both recently. It's not nostalgia.

ROTJ vs TFA is the hardest comparison for me. They're both good movies with noticeable flaws, but they're different flaws and strengths. On the one hand TFA is a retread of familiar tropes with few changes whereas ROTJ is a new conclusion to a story. On the other hand ROTJ struggles to make everyone besides Luke and Vader relevant whereas TFA fares much better with its new characters. Both movies make the mistake of reusing a planet killing super weapon, but they both handled the death of someone's father really well despite the events occurring in the exact opposite manner. This is hard.
