Can we all agree now that being iconic has nothing to do with box office success?
>>
Yeah, I think Civil War will have the same fate, but worse.

What's happening to superheroes?

I thought we all knew that since Guardians of the Galaxy was a massive success.

Being iconic doesn't mean anything in this day and age.

Supes really needs something to break up the visual of that spandex, looks like his dick should be imprinted through it.
Or maybe don't do the 6 pack effect?
>>
>>68049716
I assure you that if it was Beast Boy vs Blue Beetle, it wouldn't even earn half of what BvS earned

BvS earned what it earned entirely on the names of Batman and Superman. The only reason it wasn't a huge success was cause the movie is a pile of dog shit
>>
well, they wouldn't get to 800mil without being two of the most iconic characters ever with such a shitfest of a movie

Anyone recall the predictions of BvS that were supposed to make it awesome?
Something about Aquaman having a whole subplot in the movie.
Doomsday evolving to not look like a cave troll.
Dunno if anyone ever thought Lex wouldn't be a spazzing faggot.
Anyone expect Lex to properly trick them into fighting each other rather than actually making it a hostage situation fight? The only way that could have been a good thing is if Bats listens to Supes but radios back to Nightwing or one of the Bat-family to tell them to find Ma Kent while they put on a show for Luthor, even then I don't know that there'd be any weight to their fight.

DC should have made Lois black, their movies would have gotten better reviews by default.
>>
>>68049716

Being iconic can be helpful, but you still need to build your audience.
Avengers and Star Wars are only so successful because they got a have a huge fan-following over the years.

So far Man of Steel and Batman v Superman were more successful than any of Marvels Phase 1 solo flicks (thanks to their iconic popularity).
If this trend continues with Suicide Squad and WW, then maybe they got a possible shot at 1 billion with Justice League.
But the suits prolly expected more success much earlier... just like Sony imagined that ASM2 would magically break $1b.

Cinematic Universes are a slow long-term investment, not a quick buck.

Nah, if they weren't iconic they would have flopped fant4stic - like. It's just that iconic characters bring you only so far, so if your movie sucks you're not going to make as much money as an actual good movie with less iconic characters.
>>
>>68049743
Studios receive roughly 50% of the gross. Remember, people like distributors if it's not also the production company, theatres and the government get their share to. Big movies also tend to have big marketing budgets. Deadpool cost 58 Million to make and 100 Million to market. Bigger the movie, bigger the marketing budget.

Point is, a 250 Million dollar movie the size of B vS, according to many industry insiders will most likely need to pull in at least 3 times it's budget if not more to make a profit on the film. 50 Million profit is not particularly great for a movie this big.

Pretty much only the Marvel ones, desu. Civil War is bound to be stuffed to the gills, but with the writing and directing team of Winter Soldier, there's bound to be some good fight scenes and heart-wrenching moments.

Strange has the look of a hit in the making. I can't wait for that next trailer.

I was hyped for Suicide Squad, but the rumors surrounding the reshoots, and the fact tat there turned out to be reshoots after all, killed it for me.

Couldn't give any less of a shit about Apocalypse.
>>
>>68049750
Batman Begins was coming off of Batman & Robin, a film that at the time killed any interest in the Batman film franchise, delaying any future installments. Now thanks to the Nolan trilogy, Batman is more popular than ever.

There's no excuse for this one, honestly.

>>
>>68049760
Bullshit. BvS fucked up. Deadpool is making more money than it. People aren't bored, they just are starting to have higher standards because the sheer number of movies is kind of forcing them to pick a team.

WB fucked up bad enough that people won't care to follow it anymore. Even FOX will if they don't re-evaluate their approach after Apocalypse and Deadpool.

Marvel's not going anywhere. Hell, they literally moved the full review embargo up to next Wednesday just to laugh in your faces.

The fact of the matter is that there was never a Superhero "trend". Marvel has a great producer who makes relatively competent bets. WB, Fox and Sony have generally have idiot producers who 9/10 times make awful bets. Superhero films aren't a "phenomenon", Marvel is simply to summer blockbusters what Pixar/Disney "run by same producers as Pixar" Animation is to cartoon movies: slightly more intelligent than the autistic competition.
>>
>>68049760
As long as good genre movies come out, or at least if they don't underperform, the genre stays hot.
>>
>>68049760
It will pass eventually, but not yet. BvS not earning the money it's supposed to is not a sign of superheroes failing, but simply the film not being very good.

I love this fucking excuse. It's just another passing the buck like "there's a conspiracy by Disney" or "the audiences are brainwashed".

Also BvS was a financial success, barely, but it under-preformed to WB expectations.

Plus merchandising profits and extended bluay sales.
Plus some costs will be amortised across several films. Batmobiles and things like that. The idea that WB don't have long term plans, and contingency plans, and that they didn't know and approve of the plans for the Justice League is simply fucking retarded and a 4chan meme.
They made Man of Steel and were obviously aware of the tone.
Blaming Snyder exclusively is pretty stupid memeing.
>>
>>68053246
I think the cost of all the merchandising they did for this movie is really hurting them now.

They apparently never once considered the film would be anything but the top movie of the year and merched the shit out of everything. There are Batman oranges and Superman candles in every Target right now.
>>
>>68049730
They have been consistently mediocre and people have given so few fucks about continuity that they had to do the DOFP story to retcon all that incoherent mess.
>>
>>68049716
This would have been a box office success if they'd managed to contain the film to a reasonable budget. Instead, they gambled on it being a massive blockbuster, and that failed. If they hadn't been overambitious, it would have been fine.

>>
>>68055396
He's right though. That was the last anyone had seen of batman and going into it most of the audience seemed to think it was a prequel to the original Tim Burton film.
>>
>>68057096
Deadpool was rated R though, while BvS was what pg-13?
>>
i wanted to walk out of the theatre when batman stopped fighting just because their mothers shared the same name

like seriously what the fuck, throwing away all your ideals because of a coincidence.

fuck this capeshit
>>
>>68057125
Trying to compete with Marvel, wonder if they actually just relied on Snyder not being a complete idiot or if they forced him to put in shitty sub plots and shit.
>>
>>68049716
it's more to do with marketing and generating enough buzz around your movie

both avengers were absolute trash and they got over 1.5 billion from what I remember

the force awakens was arguably even worse than avengers and still managed to earn 2 billion
>>
>>68049716
>Can we all agree now that being iconic has nothing to do with box office success?
Don't be a moron, it doesn't have "nothing" to do with it. It's just not going to sell a movie all on its own.

Box Office is a measure of, what? Hype? Marketing Success? Willingness to see it?

Being "iconic" (or even just recognizable) is a foot in the door.

no way

civil war is going to be absolute garbage but all the normies, marvelcucks and capefags are ecstatic about it, which means it will do great at box office, regardless of how bad it is

1.2-1.5 billion at box office guaranteed

>while BvS was what pg-13?

BvS was very violent and edgy for a PG-13 flick, kids at my theater were either bother as fuck or scared and their parents have to cover thier eyes or leave the movie.

>Those photos of Superman's mom gagged with "witch"(close to bitch) like she was some milf crackwhore doing a cheap BSDM porno photoshoot.

I was legit uncomfortable watching that scene, completely out of place in a Superman movie.
>>
>>68049716
no it's the bad reviews that killed it, the movie made all that money solely because of batfleck, every review is praising batfleck portrayal and bashing the mess of the story this film has.
damn shame really cause he's my second favorite batman, Conroy first.
>>
>>68057399
>no it's the bad reviews that killed it

Super Hero movies are usually critic proof, nobody cares what those artsy faggots had to say about some triple AAA flick, everybody would want to see a Superman Batman and Wonder Woman movie.

Word-of-mouth killed the movie
>>
>>68057385
>it's gonna be bad!
>the only reason it'll do well is because they are sheep!
So numbers and ratings only matter when they confirm your bias?
>>
>>68056940
the movie was such a mess that not only do you need to fill in blanks for scenes they don't show you but you've gotta figure out wtf is going on with the shit they do show you.

Why the fuck did these letters need to come from Lex?

If they did and he'd been sending them for months his whole plan falls apart if Wayne had actually seen them, confronted the guy they were supposed to be from and discovered that they were sent from somebody else.

It's not like they all arrived at once they'd been returning with red ink over them for months and the guy IS crazy anyway so they may as well have been coming from him.

It's such a minor part of the film but it's fucking retarded in every single way you look at it.

doubt it, hoping Suicide Squad doesn't end up being bad too, I really want dccu to take off, I want to see the justice League in live action for the first time, they can cancel all the rest I don't care I just at least want 1 live action JL film.
>>
>>68057221
No one thought that. There wasn't this dipshit concept of a cinematic universe back then. Each batman movie was more or less a stand along batman story. You didn't need to reboot the movie every time a new actor or director took the role, they didn't need to go back and explore who batman was, or re-establish his origin every movie, or any of that shit.

Yes Batman and Robin was a bomb, and it was the reason they shelved the franchise for a while, but when Batman Begins was announced not a god damned person was confused, they just went "Oh hey, another batman movie. I hope it's better than the last one."

Not to mention that batman has had so many fucking incarnations over the years that its not some kind of wild mental gymnastics to separate them all. I mean do you also think people were considering burton's batman as a sequel to the adam west series? Of course not.

Everything in batman begins is so different from the other incarnations that you'd have to be brain damaged to think it was the same world as Burton or Schumacher, or West... or who-fucking ever.
>>
>>68057493
oh people do, and yeah word if mouth and word of mouth from reviews as well.
>>
>>68057252
They still had 3 years to make all that shit work in this film though. And surely they were thinking about this before MoS had even came out. The idea of doing Avengersin reverse could've worked if done properly.

And they still fucked it up.
>>
>>68057392
>BvS was very violent and edgy for a PG-13 flick, kids at my theater were either bother as fuck or scared and their parents have to cover thier eyes or leave the movie.
Right but it is still an available option for kids to go see it, while rated R movies are generally not seen as the massive earners that pg or pg-13 are because it, by design, excludes a HUGE demographic, namely kids, who are the primary target audience FOR capeshit.

You see what I'm saying. A rated R movie out competing (or at least keeping up with) one released for general audiences is generally a surprising thing. I mean that's the reason studios don't bother with those medium-big budget rated R movies anymore, they just don't bring the kind of return they can see with slightly sanitized pg-13 movies.

No, only 4chan autists ever argue that numbers matter, and most people only do it for bants. It's part of board culture, I guess.

Sicario didn't make shit but it sure as hell was a better movie than the force awakens which made 2 billion.

I frequent a lot of normie forums, and believe me, there was no hype for BvS whatsoever. Where highly anticipated Marvel movies like Deadpool or Civil War generate thousands of posts, BvS would get a few dozen at best, with people predicting how bad it would fail.
>>
>>68057567
Bullshit but your 4 paragraphs of tism makes me want to avoid reading another wall of text from you.

Box office aside, reminder that BvS was too smart for critics and the general public who thought it had the obligation to be a Marvel clone.

>>68057858
Because you're talking out of your ass about things that happened before you were born you fucking goofball.
>>
>>68051803
>dont get it. Cant it slug its way to 1 billion? Its at 720 millions now.

At the rate of entropy BvS's ticket sales are seeing it doesn't have a chance in hell of making it to a billion. It' a stones throw away from seeing sub million daily domestic gross and it's only in its 3rd weekend.

>Head canon, fan theories, assumptions, and over-analyzing : The Pasta

Seriously though, this is the biggest autistic denial I've ever seen. Nothing will ever top this, the level of delusion the guy that wrote this has is incredible. Whoever wrote this and whoever agrees with this fell for the "depth and symbolism" meme. Snyder is a hack whose only competent work in filmmaking is adapting already established works(Watchmen, 300) and that's not saying much.
>>
>>68049760
Disagree man, bvs biggest critical panning came from folks screaming their heroes have been turned into villains (these folks wanted 78supes and superfriends stuff).
>>
>>68057779
dont forget 3d theaters as well also gimmick theaters like 4dx, dolby and shit.

none was on deadpool
>>
>>68049716
Serious question, do you think the extremely negative ctritic response affected the amount of people who saw the movie?

Usually I don't care what critics say when I want to watch a movie, but normies could be different.
>>
>>68058551
Fucking this. Its disgusting how much money movies make by this kind of shady double-dipping.

Don't get me wrong I love seeing a big dumb action movie on a huge screen, but I hate having to do hard research to figure out what fucking version of a movie I'm buying a ticket fore.
>>
>>68058861
There are people who are going to see a movie regardless, but everyone else pretty much relies on word of mouth or reviews.

Johnny Capeshit pre-ordered five tickets for consecutive shows, and went with all his friends from the capeshit club, but for everyone else who's on the fence hearing that a movie is total dogshit is going to dissuade them for paying 15 bucks to watch it.
>>
>>68049760
I fucking hate this but critics are already gargling Marvels balls on Civil War there is no chance that does not do near Star Wars money.

I as a DCuck must sit there in the corner and ""intellectually"" enjoy the cuckoldry of Marvel ""winning"" again.
>>
>>68055943
You can't possibly make those numbers on memers alone, and the meme potential is easily compensated for by the R rating in terms of advantages vs. disadvantages.
>>
>>68057872
This was not a smart movie.

They deserved it.

Fox/Blue Sky took pains to make a prehistoric movie using existing Pleistocene critters. Pixar does that Flinstones caveman/dinosaur shit with shit-tier character design, and no one wanted to see it, go figure. lmao.
