The real shame is that Paul W. S. Anderson used to be a solid, promising, up and coming director. Event Horizon and Soldier are legitimately well made movies with a lot of fantastic shots.

Seems like a stupid rule to me, but if directors really have some unspoken rule like that then it's no surprise most adaptations suck dick.
For instance, all the god-fucking-awful Halo adaptations they've done over the years.
Nobody wants to make Chief the protag and instead they just make him have cameos and shit, but it misses the point that the entire appeal of halo is watching a super soldier kick alien ass. I guess they never had the budget for it and/or were too scared to make a movie that couldn't fall back on 80% human dialogue scenes

AvP is a boring clusterfuck with terrible characters. It has great practical effects and a neat set but the action scenes and shaky cam are fucking insufferable.
Good fan service would have been a single master shot of the alien and predator fighting. That was never once delivered. Instead we got Anderson swinging the camera around like a drunken retard with Parkinson's to hide the fact that it's just two guys in shitty rubber suits rolling around on the floor.

Normies can easily get into a storyline that uses the game's protag, there's no reason they couldn't. If anything there would be considerably less flops than there are now if the writers didn't keep trying to experiment and fail miserably at doing so.
Especially considering they shoehorned the original protagonists back into one of the later movies just to have them fail miserably where the Mila succeeds.

First half was amazing, second half was shit. So much wasted potential with it. They really nailed the atmosphere and the pacing was just right in the first half. A shame. It's also stupid that they decided to relagate Harry Mason to a side role so they could shoehorn a woman into the lead spot like every other horror movie does these days. It makes the already dikey looking Cybil Bennet seem even gayer since they kept the sexual tension despite swapping the main character's gender. It's distracting.
