Phantom Menace is easily the best of the three prequels, though. It's a fun, light-hearted space adventure, and this tone perfectly reflects Anakin's age in the film. It also is right before the world broke Lucas's heart and he stopped caring about Star Wars and started phoning it in. Lucas really tries with Episode I: he makes real sets and uses a lot of practical effects.
It's not at all "useless:" it shows a lighter side of Anakin so that his fall has greater meaning. Without it, he's just a troubled kid in Episode II who becomes a major douchebag in Episode III. The fall isn't that big because we already see in Episode II that he has a dark side to him. To put it another way, Episode I is the set-up. Suggesting skipping it is like telling a joke, but only the punchline. "So I bit him!" isn't funny at all without knowing the set-up.
Really, if you're going to skip Phantom Menace, you may as well skip the entire prequel trilogy.
