In several movies, it happens that an established character, whether hero or villain, happens upon an purportedly unexpected bomb or other explosive device, which announces its presence in a "cute" fashion of under 10 seconds, leaving no reaction time available to the character (instead only affording the director the ability to cut shots together, which will comprise the involved few seconds), except to register both understanding, and extreme displeasure.

It then frequently happens that the character is awarded a final close up shot, which cut is followed immediately by an exterior shot of the site exploding, from which we are to infer the death of the character. This is such a common device in films that its usage elicits my disgust, which I express by attaching this computer image file.

I don't what to do with my life.
Yeah, I'm addicted to pornograph and it sucks all ofy energy. I live in a fog; it's like I cant see or hear or feel nothing... everything just occurs and I'm in the middle of it all.
I mean, I fucking know the solution my problem: stop faping, work out, go out, but man, I TIRED of relapsing, this shit sucks me back.
3 fucking days is my best, seriously. On the 4th relapsing, every little anxiety intensifies my urges. "Oh boy, here we go".

In reply to the meme-posts, I actually had three flicks in mind: Speed, The Fifth Element, and Star Wars. Although a contemplative Tarkin of course does not react to his imminent death, there is still a "cute" element: he believes that he his counting down to the rebel base's destruction, when instead the countdown turns out to be coterminous with his own.

There is also a nice rhythmic device in the Fifth Element which I don't think everyone has picked up on. The smug, overconfident Zorg says "I know." three times, each time escalating his violence and villany. First he shoves Ian Holm out of his office, then he remotely kills his failed aide, then he guns down a landing bay crew, saying "I know.", each time. Zorg receives a rhythmically gratifying comeuppance when the bomb is re-activated, and his usual quip is turned round on himself:

Oh, no..!

Isn't this how death mostly comes though? Quick and unexpected? Why should explosives be an exception?
