Can attest to this. Was a kid when they came out but never read them, finally did recently when a friend lent me all seven and I really couldn't say no. (still haven't seen the flicks)
But holy shit, was it average. The worldbuilding was fine and really great at parts, but the actual story was bland if anything. Every plot point is either completely predictable or resolves via some bullshit. If you're in Slytherin, you're either just an awful person period or Snape (seriously I don't think there was a single villain that wasn't either in Slytherin or an actual monster, but honestly Rowling wouldn't see the difference). The "hidden" meanings in a lot of the characters' names are laughably obvious, fucking "Xenophilius" is literal Greek (you could make the argument that kids weren't supposed to notice them and they were just there for older readers, but if that was true wouldn't they be more clever? "Look at me, I know basic Greek roots! I'm so smart!" -no one ever). And the message is so painfully obvious it just drives you mad by the end of it, every third line of dialogue is basically "Be nice to others regardless of your differences". That message is fine but goddamn I did not need seven books of that shit.
All in all, 6/10. World is inventive enough, actually manages to get kids to read, just turn your brain down to half power and it can be entertaining. But the only way they're some of the best examples of modern British novels is if modern British novels are much worse than I would have imagined. Still better than Divergent, tho.
