I was surprised to find out, via family members that work in the local school, that substitute teachers don't show movies anymore and seriously aren't allowed to do so, at least in elementary school. Maybe it's because I live in an upper class white neighborhood, but around here they won't even hire you as a sub anymore without a college degree and a lengthy training process. You're expected to teach a full day's lesson. The system is really rigid now because of testing and schedules have to be maintained, so subs have to teach everything the teacher would have taught on that day. You can't even just call in sick anymore, if you're a teacher, you have to write a fully detailed lesson plan for the sub so they can prepare what to teach. The "no movies in class" thing is also largely because just about every kid has both parents working now so nobody picks them up at 3 anymore, so they're just shown movies until 5:30.

In our Grade 11 Animation course, we had a teacher who tought us knowledge on cinematography, green screen (we had a half gym sized room and a green screen stage where we did the morning announcements everyday), sound, lighting, computer animation in Maya, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Editing, and pretty much everything related to film and television and animation.
He taught us so much in grade 11 and 12 (grade 12 was a full morning, so 2 periods from 9-12 total) that the time just soared by and I left wanting more. He showed us the long take dinner scene (for tracking shot and steadicam work) from Goodfellas, the opening bank heist from TDK (for cutting) and other great film. He even pulled up a movie with Michael J. Fox where he's this bellhop in a hotel who's job it is to make the guests comfortable and the example was when he teaches this guest how to tip at the beginning. he only showed us that as an example on how to cut and use Buffalo Shots correctly so we don't cross the axis.
He's one of the top 5 adults I respect.
