In Justice League Unlimited they reveal Amanda Waller put forward a program to ensure there would always be a Batman so they found a prime couple (see: Terry's parents) and manipulated Terry's dad's DNA using Bruce Wayne's, Terry is biologically Bruce Wayne's son.
The plan after was to have Terry's parents gunned down like Bruce's but the assassin (Phantasm) couldn't do it so they left it alone until years later Terry stumbles his way into the Batcave on his own

Should I watch this show? After playing Arkham City I felt a Batman rush and watched the New Adventures series (I watched the Animated Series after Asylum), but it was pretty short.

It's more like Spider-Man than Batman, but that's interesting in its own way.
Bruce as a tough mentor is one of the best parts of the show, and overall it's a lot of fun. It can be hit-or-miss but some of the villains are up there with the original Batman rogues gallery.
You don't strictly need the context, but watch the first two seasons, then the movie, then the third season. The movie is really good and it has some flashback stuff you'll like even if you don't enjoy Batman Beyond. The Joker is great in it and Mark Hamill is on top form. Make sure you get the uncensored version (I'm not sure if you can still get the censored version, it was edited before release because of some shootings).
