Just saw Hardcore Henry.

It's difficult for me to write a review about this because your mileage may vary depending on what kind of film you expect going in. Suffice it to say it's not for everyone. However, I can say that for fans of the action genre, such as the Crank movies or Shoot 'em Up, this movie is an absolute joy, destined to become a cult classic within a few years.

The first time effort by director/frontman of the band Biting Elbows, Ilya Naishuller, follows a freshly created cyborg named Henry, who's eyes you see the entire movie through. You're on a quest to rescue your kidnapped wife (Haley Bennett) from the clutches of the telekinetic Akan(Danila Kozlovsky), who wants to raise an army of cyborgs like yourself to TAKE OVER THE WORLD *dun dun duuuuun*. Helping you on your quest is Jimmy(Sharlto Copley) who continually respawns as wildly varying characters.

Quite frankly though, the movie doesn't care about the generic story, nor should it. This is less a film and more an experience, something you get your friends together to come and enjoy a night out with, and damn if it isn't a hell of an experience. The bloody, brutal action and black humor is the focus here, and the movie has that in spades.

While the gimmick is one of the most original things I've seen in a while, occasionally it starts to wear thin, and the action could have benefitted from a higher frame rate. Seeing as this is the first film of it's type, however, it's a hell of a start to a potentially brilliant new way of watching films.

8/10, would see with friends.

Yeah, basically this. The music was really good in this as well.
>>
>>68018262
Fuck me that was a fun moment.

Thought it would have been funny if the one time Henry actually speaks it would have been like after she says "listen to your heart" and you just say "Nah." and slam the door.
>>
Hippy Jimmy > Other Jimmy's
>>
>>68018089
I don't expect this to be "good", and i doubt it's 'worth" the money...

But damn it, I kind of want to see it.

Maybe on the discount tuesday I'll drag some friends to it.

>implying Top Hat Jimmy wasn't the best
>>
>>68018472
Why did they leave him in the hotel? Did Henry kill him when Jimmies thought he was a traitor?
>>
>>68018469
Oh believe me, this is a friend experience at it's core.
>>
>>68018495
I think he just sort of figured there wasn't any way to keep all of them, so he just collected Jimmy Prime, Squeaky Clean Jimmy, and Ghillie Suit Jimmy (along with Colonel Jimmy) just to get out of the hotel to get him to Akan.
>>
>>68018089
>While the gimmick is one of the most original things I've seen in a while
There is nothing fucking original about this. It looks like what FPS shooters have been for ten years
>>
>>68018561
Yes but not in theaters. This is the first time a full movie like this has been attempted, but clearly not the last (the upcoming Pandemic uses it as well.)
>>
>>68018541
Ghillie Suit killed himself before they went down though.
Also, why did Akan kill Robert and Timofey? He was only planning on using Henry's first few minutes of memories, killing him under the pretense of returning his voice would've been easier than murdering two employees and crashing in the middle of a metropolis.
>>
>>68018621
Y'know, I have no idea.
>>
>>68018621
Because it's fun, and his bitch love it.
Also, experience for army of cyborgs.
>>
Movie itself was dumb and boring.

I like it cuz it's pissing off the critic establishment because it's not PC though.
>>
>>68019222

what's not pc about it?
i might go and see it just because it pisses off sjw
>>
>>68019470
It's got a lot of language that might not be considered PC, mostly coming from Jimmy ("That's the gayest jacket I've ever seen", "AKAN IS A CUNT!!", "There's a certain stigma attatched to blokes who like musicals, so just know I'm straight as an arrow" etc.) and the main female dies at the end..

Also, the main guy, Henry, is A FUCKING WHITE MALE, so there's that.

That's even funnier in the Russian dub (makes sense since half the crew behind the movie is Russian).
>>

I have no idea. There was another that summed it up perfectly, let me see if I can find it.
>>
>>68019802
Having family in Russia who I travel to meet frequently, this movie totally didn't get Russia right. There was no garbage and naked bald men with empty vodka bottles in the streets.
>>
>>68019845
Maybe, maybe. Still, that scene where Henry tries to steal clothing from a bunch of drunk middle aged gopniks swimming in the park in the middle of the day - that was pretty Russian.
>>
>>68019823
Here we are.

>As a movie, on the other hand, it’s just an excruciating, exhausting ninety minutes of virtually non-stop slaughter, sex and sadism.
Tell me that isn't a glowing fucking endorsement.
>>
>>68019719
If you're prone to Nausea, take some Dramamine or something beforehand. It basically just goes non-stop with movement, and like I said it could have benefitted from a higher frame rate.
>>
>>68018089
I saw an advance screening of this last week and I totally agree with your post. It was much, much better than I thought it would be and was actually pretty funny amidst all the action and violence. Even my wife liked it. My tickets were free, but I'd be pretty satisfied even if I'd paid $20 to see it.

You wanna see other reviews? Fuck you, I'll prove it.

>Fant4stic
Just saw Fantastic Four (Fant4stic).

I literally could not stop laughing afterwards. That was the most poorly-conceived attempt at a superhero movie I have ever witnessed. The pacing was all wrong, they have NO second act whatsoever, the final fight (the only fight in the entire movie) is underwhelming as all hell, the dialogue is offensively bad, and there's no shortage of completely ridiculous scenes with no sort of context. The whole thing feels rushed and too long at the same time.

Despite all this, there was still some potential in there. Apparently, this was cobbled together from the remnants of a script for Chronicle 2, and it really shows in the one good moment of the movie, Dr. Doom's introduction scene. He's not the maniacal dictator of a small European country like the comics, and in fact this movie seems to be distancing itself from the comics as much as humanly possible, but he was pretty clearly a parallel to the Andrew character in this scene.

If you're looking for a serious, gritty take on superheroes, go watch Batman Begins or The Dark Knight. If you want to see a cheesy as hell B-movie with a Hollywood budget, this is definitely the right movie for you.

2/10, if only for the comedic value.

Otherwise it's the King's Men Church scene, you get bored 1/3 through it.

The best action films still have a good story. The story might be simple but it's important, otherwise you just have a bunch of action scenes strung together that you don't care about.

I can't imagine how you could get engaged in the story of something shot this way. It might be entertaining for some people and more power to them for it, but it seems like it would be more of an amusement park ride than a film.

Your critique essentially boils down to 'it's good, there's loads of violence and the camera angle is cool' with the rest being PR nonsense. You don't talk about the script, acting, technical aspects, use of music, anything. You don't talk about whether the camera angle is an effective narrative device just that technically it needs work due to the frame rate.

My two biggest problems were that A. The villain's powers are never explained and it's just one thing that constantly bugged me as I thought about the film on the drive home and B. The framerate needed to be higher since the more intense scenes where Henry is getting thrown around a room are hard to watch due to the low framerate, not making me nauseous but left me squinting at some bits
It's a shame that I was one of two people in the theaters, this film is perfect for people who had BvS leave a bad taste in their mouths
Overall, if this film was just a first person action flick with a silent protag, it would be a solid 7/10, but Sharlto Copley's performance bumps the film up to almost a 9/10
>>
so is it like crank or what?

those movies aren't for everyone but i really enjoyed both crank 1 + 2

You can't be serious m8
>>
>>68032838
Agreed, this kino deserves at least an 11/10 imo

I am a bit outraged and offended OP
>>
>>68032832
It's literally Crank 2 in first person.
There's even a bit where his battery's going low and Jimmy hooks up some Jumper cables to him.
>>
>>68032770
I agree on the framerate but the Hobbit kind of squashed that dream of movies not being blurry blobs with lots of camera movement. If Avatar 2 does anything hopefully it makes 60 fps movies look good to the average consumer since I think Cameron said he wanted it to be 60 fps.

>>68032832
It's an hour and 45 minutes of a guy shooting, stabbing, and otherwise brutally killing people left and right with some short moments of reprieve from that. The entire last scene is it amplified to 11.
>>
It sounds stupid and gimmicky.

"Hey, what about an action film where you can't see most of the action?"

"Sounds good, dipshits will eat it up as long as we can make it seem vaguely underground."

And they did.
>>
>>68032832
It essentially is the insanity and action of Crank 2 set in Russia and filmed in first person
If you love Crank, this film is fucking perfect
>>
>>68033000
You do see the action, most of it happens within the protagonist's line of sight.
>>
>>68033000
>can't see most of the action
You can see a good deal of it actually.
>>
>>68024134
Right here. Fuck all you 15 year old little cunts.

>>68021422
>lol you wrote something worth reading instead of moms gonna freak and CIA, u shill

Kill yourself.
>>
>>68033000
>It sounds stupid and gimmicky
>sounds
I don't think the action in the movie is any worse than any other fast paced action movie in regards to being able to see things. It would have benefited from a framerate bump though.
>>
>>68032770
>The villain's powers are never explained and it's just one thing that constantly bugged me as I thought about the film on the drive home
I was perfectly okay wih not knowing desu. Made it more interesting.
>>
>>68033646
I mean if the other weird shit like Sharlto's character constantly respawning as different personalities is never explained and gives the idea of the world the film takes place in being a surreal version of Russia, I could dig it but his powers being the only thing that goes unexplained makes it stick out like a sore thumb, I still liked his scenes and the final fight against him but a simple few sentences explaining his powers would have been nice
>>
>shilling this blatant copy of an indie Italian movie

For shame anon

Here's the real very first first person action movie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCklKATj4oQ
>>
>>68034517
I hope you don't think using the same filming technique means it's a copy.
>>
>>68034700
Its whole gimmick and what it markets itself is being "the very first first person action movie" when clearly some Italians did it before. So they're objectively lying in their marketing
>>
>>68034742
Remember it's the first feature length film that uses a 100% first person POV
It's not a lie that the Italians were too poor to get their film in theaters
>>
>>68034844
The Italian one is also feature length and is in 100% first person

It may have not had a wide theatrical release, but that doesnt discount the fact that it did it first
>>
>>68033779
I looked at it as some scientific thing, like if Henry has robotic enhancements or Jimmy (James?) can clone himself, then maybe this bad guy had something enhanced artificially.
>>
>>68034742
I don't remember any of the trailers saying it's the first first person action movie. They have generic shit like "it changes everything" and an experience unlike any other" but every movie has those things.

Maybe they said that somewhere but it's possible the director doesn't even know about that Italian movie.

It only becomes what you expect at the very end like the last minute. The other 2 hours is parkour, shooting, stabbing, grenading, and jimmy rustling. Nothing special. I wish I could have paid a cent just to see the end. That's the only good part.
>>
>>68035179
>t only becomes what you expect at the very end like the last minute. The other 2 hours is parkour, shooting, stabbing, grenading, and jimmy rustling.

>>
>>68035179
What part of the end did you expect the whole movie to be about?
>>
>>68033646
They left Akan's origin out of the film. They gave out the 1st issue of an Akan origin comic to those who saw it at my theater today
>>
Loved the shit out of the movie, just plain fun. Now the real discussion. Your favorite Jimmy

Coked out Jimmy followed by Colonel Jimmy

Sorry for late response, I was at work all day.

My local theater usually shows movies a day or so early but I guess almost every one does nowadays.
>>
>>68018262
I thought the guy was going to write love, since he started to write L and that was fucking great.
>>
>>68032770
>The villain's powers are never explained
I just assumed it was because ''it's a fucking video game, fuck logic, this is the final boss and he's OP'' type of bullshit.
The mario jumping on bodies to go punch him at the end was so fucking video gamey it was great.

I agree with you on the framerate, it should have been higher. Too much motion at times, you couldn't see or get what was going on. But holy fuck was it good.
>>
>>68039064
So much better than writing Love, holy shit.

Like, I wanna feel bad about that ending but she was a backstabbing cunt so I think it's appropriate.
>>
>>68039181
I loved it. Just came back from the movie 10 minutes ago. I just screamed FUCK YOUR HEART at the whole
>henry, don't you have it in your heart
And that was fucking great. What an ending.

I really liked the whole metal gear solid 2 aspect of ''lol we tricked you'' and actually have the protagonist give the fuck you back to the people who manipulated him.

Havin' a good time, having a good time, woo
>>
I just watched it tonight. I thought it was a fun movie. Near the end though some fedora who brought his body pillow to the theater screamed "FUCK YOUR HEART" out of nowhere.

I went in hoping it would be first-person Crank but it wasn't nearly funny enough (I swear the funniest joke was he came out of stasis with a boner) and the violent deaths were innovative but came at such a rapid clip that by the end I was completely desensitized. You can't do a lot of exposition in a kill 'em all movie, especially when your main character is a mute, but they needed to do something to give the audience a breather before the next wave of violence.

5/10, would give another chance at the second-run flickshack or on demand. Definitely wished I didn't shell the extra bucks on Dolby Cinema; mostly it was just loud from different directions.

Saw a preview for the newest Purge. Dunno how I feel about that. Could be fun, could be a violent sjw shill
>>
>>68018361
I dunno, leaving the video give his own reply was better imo.
Like, you thought he would say ''nah'', I thought he would say ''fuck your heart'' and someone else might think something else. Not saying anything leaves it to the imagination to what the viewer might have said.

>>68039476
Looks great though.
>>
>>68039537
I wish I could remember what he yelled at the guy in Russian.

>>68039646
>it wasn't nearly funny enough
I thought it was too funny, or trying to be at least. I wasn't expecting a straight movie by any means but it got extremely silly at some points.

And I can see where you're coming from with needing a breather. There were downtimes but they weren't very long but this movie was designed as nonstop action intentionally.
>>
>>68039646
>violent sjw shill
What? Did you have a stroke at the end?
>>
>>68039646
>(I swear the funniest joke was he came out of stasis with a boner)
Really? I didn't see that.

>You can't do a lot of exposition in a kill 'em all movie,
You don't need exposition. Some guy created a way to make robots, everything is a test, everything is bullshit, and you have to just give the middle finger to everyone while killing them.
And the guy with the telekinetic powers is really just there 'cause it's a video game and he's the final boss.

I thought it was fucking hilarious the entire way.
>>
>>68039646
How fucking small does your dick have to be that you think an underwear bulge is a boner?
>>
>>68039740
>we need to change our country
>women senator
You can see the progressive thing people might bitch about.

I swear they're going to put Trump in that movie somewhere.
>>
Saw it with gf and, despite sitting in the front row, didn't get any motion sickness of any kind. Movie was fucking great. I didn't expect that much of a storyline with Sharlto's character, so that was surprisingly cool.
>>
>>68039892

>>
>>68039968
I'm explaining why it might be seen that way, jesus, don't shoot me for it. I don't believe that shit.
>a woman wanting to change shit
>>
>>68039728
Maybe if they dialed back the violence by like 15 percent the black humor might have gotten more room to breathe. A second viewing might make that more obvious, but it felt like the attempts at humor were overwhelmed, like trying to watch a stand-up routine on a rollercoaster
>>
>>68040107
>like trying to watch a stand-up routine on a rollercoaster
That sounds like fun.
>>
>>68039878
Alan's wife/the doctor basically looked at it and said "that's not normal" or something like that, and I'm not sure what else it could be
>>
>>68018089
>the action was pretty cool
>The villian was meh
>The cgi in some scenes was not all that great (but acceptable)
>The story line was pretty generic (as stated above)
>The one cool thing i liked was that the gun sounds sounded pretty damn real in some scenes.
7.5/10 would watch this again

I'd be shocked if there wasn't a Trump expy somewhere in there, even if as a stand in for one throwaway scene.

>mfw the purge taps into #blm

Huh. She said some thing like "that's not normal" or "that's not usual" and I couldn't think of what she could have been referring to. Maybe I was fantasizing about cock.
>>
>>68040345
You need to get dicks out of your mind, it's not healthy.
>>
>>68040003
There was also finger wagging about the purge targeting the poor, but in fairness I'm pretty sure that always gets mentioned. But the title is The Purge: Election Year so figure they'll go heavy on the direct political commentary
>>
>>68021713
I just got back from it. Got Madras us nauseas like 20 minutes before it it ended and bad to close my eyes. Still feel kinda sick. I get sick on boats and reading in the car though. I regret not taking motion sickness medicine before.
