I'm sorry, but Grand Budapest Hotel is like a normalified version of a Wes Anderson film, and the only reason it works is bc hearing Ralph Fiennes swearing is funny to Americans.

It bugs me that people who dislike Carruth do so with such a burning passion. Same with Malick. Maybe I'm biased because I love them both, but they catch so much shit
>>
>>68011064
Agreed especially Malick. The dude gets a lot of shit
>>
>>68011064
As somebody who dislikes both Carruth and Malick, i apologize. For me they have the technical visual aspect of filmmaking down (Malick more than Carruth (whose films look like Target advertisements to me)), but stumble embarrassingly in the ideas department. So while i can see their talent, i tend to attempt to counter the hype when i see their films praised as "brilliant" or something. They're gifted filmmakers, but not interesting thinkers.

Zero Dark Thirty
The Act of Killing
>>
The Revenant.
>>
>>68011200
That's fair. I suppose that's where personal taste comes into play, I consider them, especially Carruth, very interesting thinkers. I'll admit, with Malick, the philosophy is secondary to the story and visuals itself; I think with Tree of Life he had an absolutely fanatic study of familial relationships. However his spiritual musing hold less water for me. Carruth on the other hand, I hold as a genius of original ideas. Have you ever read his script for, or a detailed synopsis of A Topiary? It's so fresh, I was hooked instantly.

>>
A Most Violent Year
Nightcrawler
Anomalisa
Locke

Locke is probably one of my most favorite films ever
>>
>>68011255
Perhaps I should have re-worded "entry level". I meant his list consisted of easily accessible, widely known films. And I wasn't saying that his taste or those movies were bad because of it. I'd disagree with you and say someone Weerasethakul isn't entry level, but more to my point, there are films made for the more experienced movie goer that have come out in the 2010s, regardless of how well known they are.
>>
>>68011200
Malick's movies look like commercials because advertisers stole his aesthetic. It's not his fault. Also, the notion that Malick's films are purely visual is fucking absurd; there's depth there, it just goes over your head.
>>
10 Cloverfield Lane was quite nice. In was just me and my friend in the cinema, that was also nice.
Drive probably

Birdman
>>
>>68011426
I'm not him, I'm >>68011307 but I'll never use the argument of "you didn't get it". I'll respect you enough to assume you did get it and still didn't like it. I don't think he was implying Malick's films lack depth beyond visuals, just that he didn't think they were very good. I've always felt with a movie like Tree of Life, for example (my personal favorite film) your love of it will depend almost solely on your connection to the story. ToL struck an emotional chord with me no other movie has. But I understand that if the story and study of the inter-family relationships and their individual struggles with sprituality doesn't interest you, then you'll be left with what you perceive as a shallow and, in the correct sense of the word, pretentious movie. He admitted his admiration of Malick's technical work, so I think it's safe to assume he did "get it"

Oh, I agree. But for the sake of conversing with someone who seems to have not taken in interest in Malick's philosophical and religious thought, I'd keep it to something more grounded
>>
>>68011064
>>68011476
And rightfully so. How many /v/eddit crossposting kiddies have started threads saying that The Tree of Life is their favorite movie, posting nothing but circlejerk praise to upvote their egos and "based Malick" greentexts for hours and hours until bump limit? Countless, if you've been here for long enough.

Not hating on meme trendy culture is letting the hotpockets take over. It's my duty to protect the den of the true cinema.

>>
>>68010198
I watched this last night. It was okay, but the whole 'one giant take' thing was a bit on the nose for my tastes, and the ending felt unnecessary, as did a few scenes such as the lesbian kiss.

My favourite film since 1/1/2010 is hard to choose. Maybe Chronicle? That was good shit.
>>
>>68010198

Fury Road

Dark Knight

John Dies at the End

Man From Earth

The Admiral

13 Assassins

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai

Outrage

Tron Legacy just because it's pretty and the soundtrack is awesome. Plus Michael Sheen stole the show with his brief cameo.

>>68010528
That movie was comfy and warm. Ralph is a damn fine actor.

Please refrain from posting these inutile meme arguments. They are so stupid it hurts my brain to read while scrolling through this thread.

This is the exact attitude that prevents Malick from being an authentic auteur. He makes movies for the IMDb neo-cinephile who are just getting into cinema and found out Nolan isn't a God. He's a fraud for hugbox sensibility.
