What are some movies that are similar to the thing?
>>
The Hateful Eight makes for a good double feature with The Thing
>>
>>68002592
The only thing in common is Kurt Russell.
Hateful 8 is a mediocre movie.
>>
>>68002592
Kill yourself, you stupid faggot.

OP, it depends on what you're looking for. If you want the sort of Lovecraftian cosmic horror, then I'd recommend From Beyond.

If you're looking for that delightful 80's practical effects gore, then I'd recommend Hellraiser.

And if you're looking for an isolated community being picked off in the cold by monsters, then 30 Days of Night is a good pick.
>>
Watch the prequel then the original. Followed up by invasion of the body snatches and omega man
>>
h8ful 8ful
>>
>>68002625
It's pretty good. But who cares? The point of the thread is movies similar to The Thing, and Hateful Eight fits the bill.
If Kurt Russel is the only similarity you got from the two, I don't know what to tell you.

oo good pick but i have disagree with your hate towards hateful eight, i thought it was fantastically violent and enjoyable

hateful 8 uses old the thing tracks and it definitely shows

the movie leviathan from the 80s is similar and the team that made the thing came out with some crappy horror movie with all practical effects called harbinger or some shit haha

wrong file lol

also virus

these movies are all way campier than the thing but i enjoy them for the body horror
>>
Lets just talk about how great of a guy Kurt Russell is.Big Trouble in Little China was just a fantastic movie. The late 70s and early 80s were really the epitome of awesome movies.
>>
>>68002537
Why can we no longer have practical effects like this these days?

OP here, thanks for the suggestions and I've added most of them to my list.I guess I should of added that the thing is my favorite movie of all time and I was looking for good movies that are like the thing
>>
>>68002929
it's a decision made by executives

CGI is like an arms race and no one wants to have the nuggets
>>

harbinger down.jpg
93 KB, 712x400
when leviathan came out there were like 3 other similar movies about shapeshifters in a sea setting but they're so forgettable i don't remember

still good for a watch for the atmosphere

also THIS is why they don't use practical effects as much
>>
Virus. 1999 film.

Pretty bad movie. But it's got some nice effects, and it is very obviously a Thing knock off.

>The Thing in a boat
>>
>>68002537
Well, what are some of the themes and plots of The Thing

>body horror
>freezing and hostile environment
>paranoia
>suspense
>monster

h8ful 8 fits the bill for all those reasons, in a way, even more-so than AvP, a movie about monsters in a hostile frozen environment.

In a way, the thing is kind of unique in that way, since the real meat in the story comes from the distrust and paranoia as a result of the Thing.

>>68002917
>pic related
Also, Executive Decision. The current Kurt Russelssance is most pleasing.
>>
>>68002917
the Escape movies are cool i still haven't seen escape from new york! not to mention TOMBSTONE such a classic

i really need to see deathproof, i know russel probably loses because he's the villain but still
>>
>all these people comparing Cuckatino's shitty western to a John Carpenter Lovecraft film
>b-b-but muh kurt russell!
>>
>>68002537
The night of the living dead (GAR masterpiece)
Il grande silenzio
Alíen
Predator
Cut-throats nine
Evil dead
Cabin fever
Texas chainsaw massacre (TH)
>>
>>68003353
Name a movie that's more similar to The Thing than H8ful Eight.
If Kurt Russel is the only connection you make, I'd question whether you actually saw both movies or not.
>>
>>68002935
The Thing is also my favorite. I'm sure you've seen it, but Alien is another great one that fits the bill somewhat.

Really not comparable at all but Cube is my second favorite movie, might want to check that out if you like psycological stuff with a focus on the unknown.
>>
>>68002625

Except the score, and the tension, and the paranoia.
>>
>>68002537

Do you watch Japanese anime? They LOVED body horror in the 80's. There isn't anything that is specifically the same kind of horror movie type film, but there's a lot of animation with the same kind of monsters.

>Iczer-1
>Battle Royale High School

A few of my faves.
>>
>>68003475
Alien
Leviathan
Predator
Virus
>>
>>68002917

Soldier (1998) is one of his best performances and I get visibly upset when someone shits on it. He pulls a full haul with his eyes and body movements alone. He has like five lines in the movie but he's absolutely compelling. The scene where he cries after being cast out by the village is heartbreaking.
>>
>>68003347
>i still haven't seen escape from new york

don't waste another second senpai
>>
>>68002537
Like how so the body horror element the psychological horror element the creature slash alien horror element?
Like elaborate that movie is amazing on so many levels alone, the paranoia factor alone is my favorite part because who's to say that in the end the thing isn't either of our two survivors.

>>
>>68002820
Movie sucked.
>>
>>68003497
Yeah, it's just one is a dark comedy western, and the other is a supernatural horror.

But hey, similar scores and they shared an actor so EXACT SAME THING AMIRITE?
>>
>>68003621
i said they were cheesy but he wanted thing-like movies

>>68003615
ahhhh there's one of em

>tfw this was running on tv with leviathan and 5 other deep sea horror movies

i melded them all into one when i was a kid
>>
>>68003661
there's no doubt it's similar quit doggin him

same composer
same themes
same setting-vaguely
>>
VIDEODROME
>>
>>68003661
Kurt Russell and a group of others get snowed in at a confined location and get fucked over by the people who were there before them. People die gruesome deaths until finally we're left with only two doomed survivors.

You're too caught-up in genre. The movies can still be similar even if the genres are different.
>>
>>68003769
>same themes
No. A couple of the characters (like the three that weren't in on it) might've been a little tense, but you as the viewer weren't tense because it was a comedy mystery.
>same setting
Wyoming = Antarctica? Seriously?
>>
>>68002592
>>68002692

is this some new meme?

hateful 8 sucks for one, and is in a completely separate genre from The Thing

>>68003860
THIS (long live the new flesh)

also most anything spoopyish Cronenberg/Carpenter

>videodrome
>Existenz
>the fly
>scanners
>they live

also not either but neat

situation similarities in the plot don't make "similar films" in what OP is clearly asking

He wants to watch a movie like the thing, aka an 80s grimy yet campy horror film

Not a mid 2010s western
>>
>>68004092
see>>68003884
you guys are fuckin trolls or idiots or both
>>
>>68004202
the two doomed survivors premise is not at all unique

that same exact model fits dawn of the dead to the letter

a shitty qt western has nothing in common with the Thing fuck off m8
>>
>>68004202
>>68004273
Didn't know The Thing fans get this insecure when you compare their favorite film to a Tarantino movie.

I'm not in love with the Hateful Eight, but it's still more similar to The Thing than something like The Fly or Predator.

Movies don't have to be equals in order for you to compare their plots and themes.
>>
Phantoms
The Relic
Mimic

They're all pretty mediocre but they have some based actors and some 90s qts in it.
>>
>>68004369
>Didn't know The Thing fans get this insecure when you compare their favorite film to a Tarantino movie.

you're just retarded m8

anyone whos watched both movies know they aren't similar at all

Sharing a movie cliche and actor doesn't make them "similar films"

not to mention no tarentino movie has come close to carpenters worst
>>
>>68004459

this was the movie made by the effects company that did the thing 2011
they basically made the thing but on a boat version

it wasn't terrible, but it is clear, while practical effects can be amazing, they generally need SOME after effects, fuck even creative lighting and filming techniques

totally practical is just as bad as totally cg
>>
>>68004946
Kinda good, but story was shit.
