A bunch of low profile crminals get an ancient artifact that happens to contain an infinity stone, Both the main villain and "big villain behind the curtains" want the stone too.
In the final fight the villain and the chaming antihero have a dance off, and finally the anithero holds the stone and defeats the villain. Then the "galactic police" set them free of charges, and explain the main character is half alien, and that's why he could hold the stone.

It makes a nice contrast to the Avengers and their squabbles and clash of ideals.
It's the same appeal as Firefly or Cowboy Bebop, just a bunch of shit-lords hanging out in space getting into shenanigans.
Don't really see what else there is to "explain". Most MCU isn't that deep, this isn't a A Scanner Darkly, it's just a decent sci-fi film.
