Not all of us had it "nostalgia-confirmed" as you did. My personal opinion is lukewarm, but I happily admit that it is influenced by my dad, who really hated it and let it be known. When you grow up with that, it will influence your thinking.
Most of the characters are annoying. The kids are annoying of course (the girl is on her Lisa Simpson high-horse), their grandpa is stupid too, and Laura Dern has a big stupid :O face. I never actually care about any of these people. OTOH the water/jello meme is a memeorable suspense device, and the shots of them entering and leaving the island are pretty.

The English get terribly butthurt over Braveheart. Everybody else likes it though.
Does anyone not like the movie Gettyburg? My favorite war film. It shows both both armies equally for what they were and is extremely historically accurate. For every great Robert E Lee scene, there is a great scene of Chamberlain. Also, the soundtrack is one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I suppose if you don't like long movies or don't like history then it isn't for you, but those who can handle those characteristics should agree that this film is a great kino. No romantic subplot bullshit either, just a real movie for real men.
>>67977589
Well yeah, same goes for the Patriot. I think Mel just finds any way he can to piss off Brits. Like a true Australian.

>>67975644
takes itself too seriously, also not enough CGI
>>67976363
No, it didn't, although you have the good sense to correctly establish the relationship between 1951 and 1982.
The Thing (From Another World) (1951) is an adaptation of the short science fiction story "Who Goes There?", by John Campbell. In the original film version, the story's character names and behavior of the creature are largely abandoned in favor of a superhuman, vegetable-matter based antagonist. Still, it is an adaptation in the sense of its basic themes: Isolated (Ant)Arctic base, alien poses sinister and immediate threat, claustrophobia.
The Thing (1982) is simultaneously a remake of the above picture, and also a more faithful adaptation of the original short story, getting much closer to what is so originally insidious about the creature, and restoring several of the character names. A "remake" most properly implies not only that the same basic themes and ideas are explored in the remake, but also that there is a temporal / continuity break between the two films. One could make a reasonable argument that the two above films inhabit two parallel, distinct fictional universes.
The Thing (2011), however, is most /properly/ characterized as a /prequel/, and not as a remake, despite covering near-identical ground (which is instead simply logical to the story that they wished to tell). What makes it essentially /not/ a remake, It was expressly written and completed as a companion piece to the 1982 film, and whether anyone else likes it or not, or for that matter /cares/, it is a canon part of that same fictional universe. We don't have any parallel universe bullshit going on here, a la Abrams' Star Trek. It's just the stuff that happened a few nights before the "dog" got to Outpost 31.
If we counted sequels and prequels as "remakes" just because they happened to do the same thing over and over again, we would have to reconceptualize how we talk about film franchies in general.

>>67976989
Came here to post this.
>>67977949
I think this is an example of a "high concept" movie. The idea is so closely associated with this one movie (where it was executed), that if any other movie did it, it would immediately and correctly be accused of "ripping off" Groundhog Day, which is also intended as a one-off comedy albeit with some very dark, dramatic moments. Same kind of thing if anyone redid the premise of the truman show.

>goes on a diatribe about how Fellowship is the best
Is this what the few people that always liked Empire best felt like in the mid 80s when everyone started to pretend they always liked it the most?
>>67978236
You keep parroting simplicities as if it in any way touches my argument. TFA is first of all and essetially a sequel, being set in the same fictional universe as its predecessors. That said, it obviously hits a lot of the same beats as New Hope but this is incidental to the facts of its plot as they relate to the earlier movies.
I haven't seen the other two so I won't say much, except to say that if CR is a "reboot" (apart from the obvious connection to the other two films), then this strengthens the point that it is a remake. Notice how this has nothing to do with what I said above. Whoop-dee-doo, some other movie is a remake, good rebuttal. The original point is that a person said that "x" (The Thing 2011) is a remake, which is factually incorrect. It is a prequel.
I'm not planning on seeing Cuntbusters, but time will tell whether it can best be classed as a remake, or a sequel, or otherwise. To determine this, one will have to first of all pay attention to the details of the upcoming film's plot. I leave this task to someone else. If, for example, Murray or Aykroyd makes a minor role and tells the gals about the good old days, then this would seem to suggest sequel-dom (same fictional universe, later time). No, it doesn't matter how the project got started (I seem to remember they were talking about Ghostbusters III with the men a few years back)... what matters are the plot points in whatever film gets completed. That's your canon.
The Big Lebowski.
Nobody ever really talks about it so I imagine reddit did something to fuck that up. But I don't trust anyone who doesn't at least find that movie amusing.
also The Thing, Barry Lyndon and Freddy Got Fingered are personal favorites I was surprised to see got love here
