I think the failure of some of his films is due to studio meddling. Big Trouble was poorly marketed, They Live was pulled from screens according to Keith David, and these seem to be the main reasons for Carpenter leaving Hollywood. Shame because his films have a fantastic visual style (Classic Panavision with tracking) and his scores are some of the best 80s soundtrack.
If Debra Hill hadn't die, he would have made one or two more great movies, there were plans for a new Snake Plissken movie, a madhouse studios animated prequel to Escape from New York and game.
