Honestly, re-watching the prequels recently the Jedi often come across as dicks and Sheev seems right about a lot of stuff Even when he eventually has his empire he doesn't seem to have malicious intentions. Don't get me wrong, I did like the whole... "we need an army to fight an enemy we are also controlling" aspect of the prequels. I just think that they could have showed the Jedi "failing" on a greater scale instead of having meaningless clones drop in to fight meaningless droids they could have had an army of "professional" soldiers come to assist the Jedi. Have the Jedi gradually just kind of become less relevant until all that is left is the Council... then Anakin storms in and kills what is left and the remaining Jedi are forced into hiding because SURPRISE! The professional army was recruited from Mandalorian colonies and they've still got a hard-on for killing Jedi.

The Force Awakens is basically what we've been exposed too for the past decade and a half in pop culture sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother or Family Guy, all reminding us how awesome the original Star Wars trilogy is without delivering any new real content in case of scaring away old fans and alienating people, The Phantom Menace took risks and was bold in this regard, one of the reasons it is a better movie but also a disaster, a disaster but a fun one.
