I'm sure it was mentioned further in Skagboys (the prequel to trainspotting and has heaps of great lore).
I can't recall exactly, but it was hinted at more than a couple of times and I think there was an altercation where Begbie absolutely lost it (more than usual) when someone called him gay or questioned his sexuality or how come he doesn't have a girlfriend or something.

I thought McAvoy was far too charming as the cop, but it was a great movie based off an excellent book. I love movies that show a slow descent into madness and McAvoy really sold his unravelling and also the redemption.
