So I just watched Akira.
The pompous fight scenes and Tetsuo spinning out of control were completely unecessary. They made the movie feel more like an anime rather than a film. They made it feel less cyberpunk too.
It should've been more about the tumorous flesh-wire. Like all proper Japanese cyberpunk.

While I didn't feel that way I was slightly bothered by some of the animation during static scenes. The facial features morph slightly too much between keyframes. It doesn't feel as solid. Motion active scenes don't suffer beceause there's a lot of motion that compensates any uneveness.

the manga is basically the same as the movie.
The 3-4 volumes of the manga not covered by the omvie are essentially a big digression. Things happen ut they aren't of much dramatic or thematic significance they make almost no difference to the themes or the main dramatic relations of the piece.
the movie was directed by the same person who wrote teh manga, and he finished the manga after the movie and decided to use basically the same ending as the movie. He knows what hte most important elements of the work of fiction are and what to include.
