As far as lightsaber duels went, it far outdid anything from ANH and even succeeded at not turning heroic jedi into bar-room thugs. ESB just barely surpassed it in emotion, but made up for that with two lightsaber duels compared to only one in ESB.
We'll have to wait and see, but I'm excited for 8. I'm hoping it will outperform even the final duel from RotJ (which wasn't a good movie otherwise), but over all 7 has cemented itself as the best star wars movie in 30 years.

Like how you want to scratch bugbites, the pain from scratching is greater than the pain from the bite, and so your brain only processes the pain from the scratching, which is intentional and therefore easier to ignore.
In Kylo's case, punching his wound probably hurt more than the wound itself, which meant for a few seconds after the wound seemed to hurt less, same way that after swinging two baseball bats around, swinging one feels much lighter.
I have no sources to back this up, but that's my thinking. It's a way to trick the brain and nothing else.

It's more about *why* he's a Vader fanboy, and that clearly has to do with his perceived inadequacies in respect to his role in the family legacy. It would still work, but it would be fundamentally different if he wasn't a direct descendent of Anakin's. It's for this reason (along with the fact Luke is a major presence) that Rey doesn't need to be a Skywalker. The Skywalker legacy is already accounted for and weaved into the themes of the story with Kylo Ren.
