Yes. Hack Snyder is okay when he has a literal story blueprint to follow. Do the Ultimate Cut. It's nowhere near as deep as the comic, but it's a nice complement. Try to shut your brain off during the music pieces and hyper-fighting.

It really doesn't. It may look exactly like the comic (albeit with additional - and extremely unfitting - stylistic elements courtesy of Zack Snyder), but it manages to miss or mangle every single theme and point the comic was going for.
Zack Snyder may understand that the book is great, but he doesn't seem to understand why. All he saw was that it was dark, violent and had politics, and so he made the movie with exactly that, but it's the most superficial assessment of the source material someone can make.
Watch the directors cut but not the ultimate cut, that is just shit unless you are a comic cuck

He's not particularly smart, he's just able to see atoms and shit.

That's kind of the whole point of his character - he's grown into a fatalist because he sees everyting as a deterministic chain of events and feels too detached from humanity to make a real effort to change it. By the time he realizes on Mars that life is precious, Veidt's plan is already in motion. And he's not completely omnipotent, it' specified he doesn't know if he could catch all the missiles in time.
