Can we all agree that District 9 was Neill Blomkamp's Magnum Opus?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWW_eayAOqU
>>67932300
Considering it's the only good movie he's made yeah sure
>>67932300
Yes.
>magnum opus
You mean one hit wonder?
Yes.
>>67932382
why didnt people like elysium or chappie?
>>67932411
They weren't District 9
>>67932411
Because Elysium was boring and Chappie was shit.
>>67932300
>It could have been Halo :'(
>>67932425
then why doesnt he just make a sequel for D9?
>>67932300
D9 is overrated as fuck and Elysium is underrated as fuck.
>>67932449
It doesn't need a sequel. D9 was a movie which had a story and told it perfectly. any further additions would just come off as cheapening the original impact.
>>67932481
Haven't seen Elysium, but after watching D9 again recently, I can confirm its extremely overrated
>>67932411
Elysium is fucking terrible and Chappie is just there.
>>67932499
oh.. ok... ;_;
its just such a fantastic setting, and i wanna know what happens to christopher and wikus
fook
>>67932534
This, I was amazed at dull it was a 2nd time. Very overrated, 3rd act is shit.
We need district 9 part two.
>>67932614
D9 had a huge marketing campaign.
>>67932633
No we don't.
>You will never enjoy a movie again as much as you enjoyed seeing District 9 for the first time as a 16 year old.
Can't even watch it again to recapture the memories because it's such an obviously shit movie through adult eyes. Same with TDK.
>>67932300
This was bad
This was SIGNS-plot-holes tier bad
This guy is a hack
>>67932300
ONE OF THE BEST SCIFIS EVER MADE
>>67932732
I'm 27, watched it recently, and think its an amazing movie. Good action, touching story
>>67932748
Plot holes? Explain
>>67932633
They really, REALLY shouldn't make another one. It's like the Matrix, literally perfect as is
District 9 has a mech firing a pig at people. It's impossible to overrate.
>>67932633
>the lead prawn said three years
>three years later no District 10
I wonder if they can interview some Europeans about the Syrians and then surprise! You're now part of District 10.
The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon is strongly at play here. Just watched this movie for the first time last night and all of a sudden this thread pops up, and I never ever see any threads about this movie here until now.
>>67932300
sure.
>>67932409
most people dont even have one good idea in their lifetime, much less the drive to accomplish it. neil did great.
>>67932300
It's the kind of post-modernist science fiction flick made with dirt and sweat and lack of intelligence that tricks the my little poney lovers and videogame players into falling on a trap of poorly presented emotional and popularist fare and fueled anti-american messages, mistaking shock and grade school symbolism with depth.
For comparison, Transformers 2 achieves much better results at thrilling the viewer with a self aware tone and delivering an imposing critique of government morals in the midst of the Iraqi crisis. The difference between District 9 and Transformers is while Blomkamp strives without results to make slapstick consumerist agenda look like serious thing, Bay transforms the pulp and tongue in the cheek entertainment into a contundent message in troubled times.
>>67933848
I appreciate that he's helping to bridge the gap between Hollywood Vimeo-centric sci fi/vfx artists. District 9's concept material had massive potential.
Thing is, the ideas behind Chappie and Elysium weren't any better or worse than D9, the potential was there but Blomkamp is going to prove over and over that he can not competently lead projects like this.
He and his wife are not a good writing team, all three films shake off all semblance of philosophy by the end in exchange for the big and vapid action sequence. They're amateur, tropey writers and actually can not stop themselves from inserting one-dimensional military-man villains to force conflict.
The issues go deeper but it's all another George Lucas case where he was kept under check by producers until they made the mistake of giving him free reign. Good ideas are just a start, you can't bank on it.
>>67932411
Terrible fucking movies. Elysium has the best ever sci fi mechanical aesthetic though.
D9 wasn't even good. The only notable thing about it is that it was able to have some nice special effects on a relatively smaller budget compared to most hollywood films and it made some decent money so he got funding for a couple more to see if the box office would scale with an increased budget.
>>67932300
no. Chappie.
>>67932300
The sound effects in that video are quite literally the most cancerous sound effects that plagued the movies made around this time. Every single one of them makes me cringe
I really would like to know why people though Elysium was "terrible".
>>67932300
Next to the worthless shit he has directed after D9, yes
>>67932300
>Alien Nation 2.0
>>To all the feebleminded reprobates that don't get this movie.
This movie was hated by the hard right wingers stupid enough to think it was all about behing against them and unloved by the leftist clones that felt "uncomfortable" by the equation of blacks and prawns. But neither of you should feel left outYou're both scum.

>liberia 28 yrs later.jpg
that's mozambique
>>67932300
I don't think you get Blomkamp if that's what you believe.
Considering it's the only original movie he made and everything else he did was copy D9, yes.
>>67932300
I think we can all agree that district 9 was a fluke
>>67932411
elysium was the least subtle agenda driven movie in the past few decades and chappie was ruined by those rappers
>>67937501
>chappie was ruined by those rappers
no way bruh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyGIMvHY1WA
>>67937677
I just don't get the appeal of this band
>>67937769
do you understand the appeal of shitposting?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S-kkTrO5QI
>>67937501
Even if it is agenda that doesn't make it a bad film. It was easily on par with D9 (even that had a worse agenda).
I also disagree with your comment on Chappie, it was ruined by NOT making the rappers more prominent. Indian kid was complete insufferable faggot that ruined the whole movie same with Wolverine and Alien Girl. They should have made a movie based around them finding Chappie and just fucking around.
>>67932300
It's a low bar. Guy has the nuance of Jack Chick.
>>67932300
First for fish gun.
>>67932411
I loved Chappie though.
>tfw no operator robot bro.
The movie wasn't even that good. 2009 was just a really shitty year for mainstream cinema, so it stood out. Which resulted in people praising it too much.
>>67938089
>Tavor
>fish gun
>>67938321
It's actually a Vector CR-21 you dolt.
CAHT SUM CAYKE
I would say it's his only good film, because it was the least heavy handed with its message.
Elysium
>RICH PEEPLE R BAD
>EVERYONE SHOULD GET CURED OF EVERYTHING EVEN THOUGH EARTH IS ALREADY OVERPOPULATED
>DURP DA DOO
Chappie
>YOU DON'T DECIDE WHAT HUMAN MEANS, SHITLORD!
>NURTURE OVER NATURE
>Evil people have mullets?
Let's face it, Blonkamp's a one-hit wonder. Nothing more to see.
>>67932300
Can we also agree that this movie does not need a fucking sequel?
>>67933858
This has to be bait
I LEARNED FOOKAN PRAWNS LIKE KET FUUD
>>67932300
he still has to make a HALO movie. He got cucked on that and actually his style suits that universe perfectly.
>>67932300
nah it's only OK at best
chappie was pretty good, I probably watched it with rose tinted glasses because I like die antwoord though
>>67932300
blomkamp is a hack and that movie was shit
>"look guys, aliens are really a metaphor for racism, omg so deep"
>>67939443
WHO GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THAT
THE MOVIE WAS FUCKING AWESOME
Where the fuck is D10?
>>67939443
pretty sure the BBC is has produced some sort of series which is identical in its plot but much more thinly veiled in terms of it being a metaphor for racism
>>67939500
the movie was boring as fuck
it tried to be clever sci-fi way too hard for what it was. the whole time i felt like i was watching a movie made by a first year film school student whose two favourite movies are 2001 and fight club because "they're so deep and mindblowing"
blomkamp is an awful director and anyone who can't see that has shit for brains
>>67940136
NAME A BETTER ORIGINAL PROPERTY SCIFI MOVIE OF THE 2010S YOU RETARDED FUCKING FAGGOT
>>67934903
there may not be knowing who really was in charge of some of those decisions.
(for example, peter jackson being controlled by producers for the hobbit)
>>67933367
>I'm 27
No you're not.
>>67932300
I hadn't watched this in a dew years and suddenly it looks dated as fuck
>>67932300
Why are they speaking Russian throughout this clip?
>>67940453
I'm 33
How does that make you feel
His shorts are all better than the full-length movies they spawned.
Tetra Vaal and Tempbot are both really good, I don't understand how Chappie was so bad
>>67932411
>people
it's just a bunch of faggots posting memes in their bedrooms
>>67940189
Moon, Cloud Atlas, Upstream Color.
Shit even Interstellar was better than District 9.
It was excellent. Part of them problem with Elysium and Chappie is that he just keeps making the same movie. He needs to step outside his comfort zone.
>>67940887
>Upstream Color
I have no words
>>67940931
Well yeah I figured that was the average response I'd get from a Blomkamp loving pleb.
>>67932300
you all are really too harsh on Blomkaph...
It's a Sixth Sense paradox.
Chappie and Elysium are really good(not great, but they are movies you are willing to give 2 hours of your life to watch), but now every Bloomkampf movie is compared to D9.
If you are a fan of cyberpunk SF movies, i honestly dont know what else would you watch?
You have Blade Runner, couple of good movies from 90 with Schwarzenegger (Running Man,Total Recall) and that's it.
Edge of Tomorrow is good but it goes more in line with pure SF.
Bloomkamp has a knack for making a world and technology extremely believable and his movies even if they are not as good as D9, are at least fun and interesting to watch.
I think Hollywood fucked him, if he stayed loyal to S.African mentality his movies would be much more gritty and social/techno critique .
>>67940980
BTFO
>>67940980
I'm not even idolizing that guy but whoever mentions Shane Carruth's hipster 3deep5u garbage I can't help myself but to laugh at them. Primer on the other end was bretty good.
District 9 completely fell apart in its second half.
>>67940996
>cyberpunk
that... that's not what his movies are.
>>67940887
NOTHING HAPPENS IN FUCKING MOON, MIGHT AS WELL TAKE PLACE ON A SOUND STAGE
CLOUD ATLAS IS CONVOLUTED HOMO SHIT
UPSTREAM COLOR, GO TO BED SHANE
DISTRICT 9 IS MUCH BETTER THAN ALL 3
>>67941043
>hipster 3deep5u garbage
nope.webm
sorry there weren't any explosions to appease your adhd i guess.
>>67941063
>GO TO BED SHANE
STOP ACTING LIKE EVERY POST ABOUT ME IS ME! I'M ONLY ONE OF THE PEOPLE ITT THAT LIKE MY MOVIES!
>>67941043
>Shane Carruth's hipster 3deep5u
"I didn't get it therefor it's shit"
I have to admit it's not my favourite type of movie but you can't say it's not a fucking amazing piece of cinema.
>>67941077
Your explanation sure proved me otherwise.
>>67941114
you wanted me to explain the movie for you? o-okay, have fun at avenger's two, bro!
District E is in preproduction, E being Earth...
Well, as it seems , prunes were worker drones, what came back were warrior caste
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E49BB1vE2tY
>>67941063
>NOTHING HAPPENS IN FUCKING MOON, MIGHT AS WELL TAKE PLACE ON A SOUND STAGE
Let me kindly dismiss every word that you say from now on.
Elysium trailer was so much better than the movie, all that potential lost.
All because of the shitty propaganda.
D9 is very overrated, Elysium is better at everything.
Chappie was a mistake.
>>67932300I can't read or hear his last name without thinking of "blumpkin".:^(
>>67941053
ok, what would you call this genre, it's not pop SF, neither its hardSF, what, is it Anime SF?
I know what cyberpunk is, i read all Gibson books.
Its similar, at least gadgets are here...
>>67941063
hey kid, your pleb is showing
>>67941853
dirtpunk
>>67932300
I just could not get into District 9, something about it I just hated
wheres the S E Q U E L : ' (
IT W A S D U E
2 0 1 2 : ' (fook
come on, we both know it's not about the gadgets even if they were all there (which they aren't). the biggest peice of tech relevant in the sprawl trilogy was their version of the internet. cyberpunk is about the counter-culture in the world. teh disparity between the rich and the poor. people repurposing the tech megacorps use to control them and turning it on their owners.
>>67942532
fuck, meant for
>>67941853
>>67932551
he lied
>>67942532
Elysium meets that definition at least.
