I thought this was gonna be good. Wow was it not. The acting is so simple; it's like watching the movie equivalent of a children's book. John Wayne's character is an asshole and I don't understand how he has any friends. The chief Comanche is clearly a white guy in makeup. The character interaction is daytime-soap opera quality. The homestead is in the middle of a desert where there is no way they would ever make a living. They keep saying they are in Texas when they are showing shots of Arizona. Just a complete waste of two hours.

I bet you prefer Memetino westerns

>hating on the greatest western of all time

kill yourself OP. Not even trolling.
>>
>>67930954
there's literally no depth to it at all. it's like watching children play cowboy and indians. the only part that felt authentic was watching people ride horses across obstacles.
>>
B8 b8 for my best M8
>>
>>67930821
I'll never understand why people put classic westerns up on their list as high as Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. It's usually just meaningful stares and cartoon physics.
>>
>>67931731
Tbh i didn't like it either and I wanted to
>>
>>67930981
This, it is hardly watchable today.
>>
I'm trying really hard to like westerns. I got over the same hurdle with foreign, black and white and silent films but I really can't do it with westerns...

Do I have to like horses and survival courses to appreciate it properly or some shit?
>>
>>67930821
There are 2 reasons The Searchers persists as a classic 1) It influenced films which are much better than it (Taxi Driver for example) 2) Many believe the film has a subtext about racism that adds complexity to its narrative.

The only western I've ever seen that I'd fully recommend is McCabe & Mrs. Miller, but it barely qualifies. It doesn't really fit snugly into the western genre and subverts a lot of its cliches.
>>
It's funny how the Italians were so much better at making Wild West movies than the people who actually had the Wild West.
>>
>>67932007
since it was made in the studio system the things movies back then could get away with was only limited. criticizing a movie because a white actor plays a native american is completely preposterous, that was the norm back then and wasn't frowned upon at all. watch movies like this understanding the limitations on it while it was being made.

that being said this is indeed not a good movie. watch The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance instead.
>>
>>67931980
Good Bad Ugly was painfully slow, had a hilariously bad villain-hero-luck dynamic.
Butch Cassidy was alright apart from a Californian surfer being afraid of water.
Assassination of Jesse James - Masturbatory, I blame Casey Afflecks autism.
>>
>>67932180
The problem with the white chief was that all the other Indians were played by actual Indians, so the white guy stuck out and looked like he was one of the cowboys playing dress up.

John Ford's Westerns are better than any Italian shit.
>>
>>67932287
Try The Professionals, High Noon, maybe also The Wild Bunch.
They're very different movies so try all of them even if you don't like the others.
If you liked Butch Cassidy you'll probably enjoy the Professionals.
>>
>>67930821
This film is dark as fuck. 2nd viewing of it, I saw what was really going on. John Wayne's characters racisim to cover up the fact that he's the father of the dude he tracks with. There are signs all the way that he was in love with an Indian woman who was killed and sculpt. Also I love the hut burning scene, which star wars used well.
>>
It's great, watched it recently, you can really feel the influence in other stuff. It stands alone as well, the kind of people who don't like this movie are the same crowd who think breaking bad is better then the sopranos. We call those people redditors/plebs

I know this is a bait thread, but c'mon. Maybe you have to be an American to truly understand westerns, but surely you yuroplebs can at least grasp at the filmmaking aspects.
>>
>>67932676
This is the only impressive shot in the whole film
>>
>>67932450
Ethan Edwards is related to Martin Lawley (an uncle?), but he isn't his father.
>>
>>67932676
I'm an American and it's not bait. Why do they have a homestead there anyway? What do the cows eat? Sand? Who thought it made sense to use a desert to film a movie about ranchers?

>>67932771
The film tells you that Martin is the adopted son of Ethan's brother, but it doesn't tell you why he needed to be adopted.
>>
>>67932676
>Maybe you have to be an American to truly understand westerns
But Sergio Leone and Fred Zinnemann were both euros
>>
>>67931806
no, it's very watchable. if you werent such a disgusting samefag you'd realize that
>>
>>67932724
Nah, the one at night with Wayne looking over his shoulder at a dead Indian I think it was was a great shot
>>
>>67931910
Why are you forcing yourself to like anything? just accept that you're a pleb and live your life
>>
>>67932807
Hmm, it never occurred to me that Ethan might be Martin's father. Maybe the novel makes it more clear.
>>
>>67932080
That's a damn good list of great westerns.
>>
>>67932034
Wrong. Not even leone's best

those types of westerns are basically just the capeshit of their era, there's very very few actually good ones, and the searches is not one of them.

If you want to see a John Ford movie that actually does have a tv aesthetic, watch The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. The Searchers isn't it.

>>

U are retarded it has a shit ton of depth only it is implicit. If u weren't an autistvu could pick up on the subtext.
>>
>>67930821
I love John Ford's directing style but so far there isn't a single one of his films that I've thought was anything more than decent. Is he just attracted to weak scripts or what?
>>
>>67931927
It does if u read the fucking book it's obvious. U see the same author wrote the same concept from both sides. They wrote a story about an Indian girl being adopted by white people and the Indian trying to find her. Also if you notice things like John Wayne starting out in a Confederate outfit and endibgvib a union outfit it is supposed to both be emblentayic of America changing same with the character. I suppose you didn't notice the girl is actually John Wayne's daughter because it never mentions it, because it implies it visually. These are only a couple things.
>>
>>67930981
You're a retard. It has a shit ton of depth. That's why it's so well regarded.

>>
>>67939598
Funnily enough none of those are great directors, either.
>>
>>67939663
They put the story first and the directing second, they let the words and the actors make their films great.

Billy Wilder is a perfect example of someone who was an amazing filmmaker, but a mediocre director. My point still stands
>>
>>67934234
this still a better film

yes, he is. Did you not understand the theme of race mixing in the film? Waynes comrade is half indian, his daughter is being raped by one, andt he chief is part white.
