That's nice n all but who would win in a fight?
>>
>>67894183
>>67894197

Why? I liked it, maybe not as much as their best but it was still a good, mature movie by regular standards. It had charm, idiosyncrosy and depth.

Seems like some people get used to quality and then bored of it. Is this typically American?
>>
>>67894429
i mean that in terms of all the coen brothers movies
>>
It was super weird but I enjoyed it.
>>
It's good. Obviously a slighter film than most of their work but really funny, charming. Especially if you've seen or enjoyed Busby Berkely films or films of that era. I'd recommend the excellent The Gang's All Here, one of Richard Based Brody's top ten American films, from which Caesar draws some influence. It's on youtube in its totality.
>>
>>67894197
Forgot to mention I've only seen No Country for Old Men and Big Lebowski.

Just the usual shitty off year Coen Brothers circlejerk with all their buddies.

They have had this pattern for years now. Make a masterpiece and then follow it up with a piece of shit starring George Clooney.

Oh Brother Where Art Thou has more going for it than any of the other Coen/Clooney movies but I'd still sacrifice it in a heartbeat if I got to take Hail Caeser, Burn After Reading and Intolerable Cruelty down with it too.
>>
pretty harmless movie. it does feel slightly disjointed but overall entertaining in a 'lite' way. one of those tbs/tnt movies that you leave your tv on while you do other stuff around the house.
>>
>>67894753

book burner

Catherine Zeta Jones isn't my cup of Tea so I'd miss anything with her in it but burn after reading was also fine and however mediocre by Coen standards, it was still high flag compared to most Hollywood stuff. Hoby the cowboy in Hail Caesar was a fantastic character but you'd have to be a whole person not to see it. They could hang an entire movie off that character on his own.

I wish they had. Maybe then it would have felt like an actual movie rather than some Coen Brothers variety show.

Really odd.

It had some glorious moments, but was definitely among the weaker Cohen Bros movies. Ultimately forgettable.
>>
It was good. It was a little too aimless, but it was fun, it had me laughing. I dragged my normie friend to it and he enjoyed it. Everything with Clooney was fun, and to be honest, Channing Tatum's dance was pretty spectacular. I think dropping the ScarJo pregnancy stuff may have helped the pacing, becauss it seemed pretty unrelated to the rest of the movie, but either way, it was good.

Pretty meh but I absolutely loved the set design and noir feeling of the movie, would've worked better if the cowboy was the main character because Josh Brolin was boring as fuck.

It's just a little gag my autistic friend. I think that scene was partially a love letter to the time intensive old ways of editing and the editors that slaved over films in similarly dark rooms for months on end.
>>
>>67897039

this to. It was a love letter to the movie industry that harked back to a particular era. I kept thinking of that silent film from 2011, the Artist. The industry seemed to love that movie and it did have some appeal for ordinary people but it was meant as a nod to everyone in the industry past and present. Hail Caesar was set during a classic period of the Cold War with Hoby as the personification of the American guy, sweet, charming, Salt of the Earth but with a sharp common sense and an awareness of the dangers faced by America by the Soviets. It was a classic piece of Cold War propaganda. The dancing sailors was so fucking gay it made me wretch and when he turned out to be a commie it was just perfect, especially with the comic book submarine rising out of the sea.

deserved a 8/10

these.

Also what's next for his career after the success of Merrily We Dance?
>>
One of their weakest. Enjoyable if not only for Alden Ehrenreich. I hope he breaks out after this. But this movie was more suited for a miniseries than a movie. We never got to learn anything about the protagonist at all. Almost every subplot was more interesting than his no smoking one. This feels more like a movie made to have the Coens showcase their musical setpieces rather than make a cohesive story.
>>
>>67894183

Not nearly as bad as Ladykillers or The Hudsucker Proxy but it wasn't very good at all. It borderline felt like a series of skits. Coen brothers love to have quirky cameo scenes in their movies but there were a few too many and not a hell of a lot happened. It felt like the movie was still setting up when it was mostly done.
>>
>>67897493

I don't know enough to talk about any singing cowboy movies but that would be for the character beyond *his* character. Hoby's character took me in gradually, first of all his humbleness when he was dealing with Laurence Lawrentz then the way Mannix *felt* he could trust Hoby with the situation and how Hoby advised him. How natural and charming he was with the female starlet he'd been set up with by the studio and how he found Clooney. Just walking calmly in and concluding that it had been the "Commies".

It actually helped me appreciate and even understand the political tension of that time.
>>
>>67897493

You know, when America was the good guy.

>>67894183

Extremely forgettable

An absolutely spectacular piece of cinema. The tying of historical film production and controversies alongside classic cinema tropes creates a splendid mix for the true cinema buffs. For those ignorant of the plaitiudes of cinematic history may find it boring, but those who have partook in the best class hollywood has to offer will be greatly entertained.
>>
I've seen three movies this year and this was the shittiest one.

These days real life is making movies look like ...well, movies. Remember when film could be controversial? It still tries to but when you can search for and find appalling acts of random and casual murderous violence on the internet not to mention the tidal wave of Pornography what kind of escapism has cinema to offer? There's a post further up the thread with someone talking about how they go to the cinema for heavy petting and he missed the film because of it. I've liked almost everything these guys have made simply because they make me look at life differently and the feeling is very unusual.

>>67898493
You seriously liked Deadpool more than this? And you pretend to be a fan of cinema?
>>
>>67898845
I certainly left Hail Caeser feeling more disappointed. I saw Deadpool expecting a terrible film and it was only mediocre so in that regard it was a positive surprise. I had a pretty big investment going in to Hail Caeser since it was the Coen Borhters.
>>
>>67898939
I can't understand what goes through a person's head to be disappointed by this movie
>>
Hilarious
>>
>>67898970
It wasn't funny enough to excuse the fact that it was just a grab bag of Coen brothers quirky stuff with nothing holding it together and it certainly didn't muster any kind of investment from me. It had some great individual sequences but it didn't come together into any greater whole. I don't like the Coen Brothers "fun" movies in general though. Inside Llewyn Davis was my favorite film from that year but this just felt like them masturbating on the screen and having a laugh with all their celebrity friends.

I enjoyed it more than this ^^. It's amusing how you accuse Caesar of having nothing holding it together when Inside LD was basically a few days in life of a failed folk singer. It's ironic even when Caesar is a story about someone trying to hold sometihng together.

>>67899376
I don't like comedy films in general.
>>67899400
Well with Inside Llewyn Davis the entire movie is spent building a character.. My problem with Hail Caeser was that it was just a scattershot bunch of parts with no part getting enough attention to actually make me care about what was happening. I didn't feel any investment in what happened to Josh Brolin he was more like a surrogate to have Coen brothersy "comedy" things happen to him than an actual character. The main goal probably was just to be funny, but doesn't really work for me and so the film was a disappointment. The only parts I really appreciated where the recreations of old fashioned movie scenes like the synchonized swimming and the musical number.
>>
Does Clooney really deserve a name bigger than film title?
>>
>Actor name bigger than title.

Think ill pass.
>>
>>67899805

>>67899805

>llewelyn Davis

But in the end, I didn't like that character. He turned out to be a vain prick who knew fuck all about music. He knew fuck all about music from both ends, the cheesy popular schlock OR the folk poetry that defined an era. In the end he even fucked up being an ordinary joe.

In Caesar, Mannix was in a constant dilemma trying to make a life decision at the same time as dealing with the abduction and ransom of his biggest star. It wasn't about the money either, Mannix really cares about this industry, all aspects of it and he has respect for it. He didn't even hesitate to get the money and his instinct was spot on. When he took Hoby into his confidence and listened to his advice it was an incredibly subtle performance and Brolin fucking nailed it. He is a brilliant actor.
>>
>>67900286
If you stripped all of the comedy scenes out of Hail Caeser it might have been a better movie. I like his character on paper but it was too diluted by the "funny" scenes in the actual movie.

I appreciated how unsympathic and unlikeable Llewyn Davis as a character was. The more predicated on misery a movie is the more I can connect with it.
>>
>>67900619

I said 8/10 earlier so it could've been better, I just disagree strongly that it wasn't any good. I sympathise with how you relate to movies, they are a vent for me too. I wish I could get as excited or upset by life as much as I can by a movie and they've got me now, I know this. My soul is small but it's not utterly extinguished, and neither is yours.
>>
>>67900760
I wouldn't say that it wasn't any good, just that I left feeling pretty disappointed. There was a lot to appreciate about it, it just didn't come together into a satisfying whole for me. I'd give it another shot, but after a single viewing it was definitely way down the list in terms of Coen Brothers movies. I've typically not enjoyed their pure comedy type films that much in the past though, so maybe this one just wasn't for me.

I walked out of it feeling the same way I did after Inherent Vice, there was a lot that was good ABOUT IT but the fact that it wasn't a knockout for me is disappointing in and of itself considering the fact it was made by the people who made some of my all time favorite movies.
>>
>>67894183
There were definitely individual scenes that were gloriously hilarious, but overall as a film it lacked a coherent flow.

The scene where Hobie is sent to act in Laurentz's feature is probably the hardest I've laughed in the theatre in a long time.
>>
>>67901157
>lacked coherent flow
Why does everyone have this (wrong) opinion? It's very obvious how everything sticks together
