"Record of the lodoss war" was literally just a group of D&D players who published their campaign and it was later animated.
That is what the movie needs to be. Circa 1982 D&D adventure with every cliche: a female elf, a scottish dward, a token fighter, a wizard and a cleric. A movie written by actual oldschool people who played the game.
If it feels uncomfortably close to "the lord of the rings" then they are doing something right.

It's not about the wargame roots. As early as AD&D, D&D was already referencing itself more than trying to portray some genre of fiction, and by the time 3e was rolled out it was a genre in itself, a bloated, incestuous mess of bad math, ancient houserules and shitty design decision turned sacred cows. You don't play D&D to roleplay a fictional character in a fictional world anymore, you play D&D to roleplay a D&D character in a D&D setting, because the game is mechanically removed from anything other than itself.

The percentile is less the thing with that system than it being that your abilities are basically your hardcoded roll goal. You have a fifty in strength? You need to roll fifty or under for any strength-based check.

Conflict resolution. Something that limits your options and creates a risk of failure.
