Vinyl costs $7m/ep ($100m for the season with $30m for the pilot) and only 570k are watching the show live or same day via DVR. Frickin' Girls is getting about the same amount of viewers at a fraction of the cost.

What has gone wrong at HBO?
>>
Where does all the money go? It's absolute trash and they have no big names attached.
>>
>>67892466
Bobby Cannavale and Olivia Wilde are reasonably big names, Mick Jagger and Scorsese must cost a bit, period dramas are expensive to make, and there's various rights issues.

But money is clearly being burnt on this show.
>>
>7,000,000 per

That doesn't sound right, as in, it sounds awful.

>30,000,000 for the pilot

That's just stupid. You could make Deadpool for that money. That's a feature length film with tons of effects.
>>
I'm not complaining. Its a fucking great show. Its so refreshing to watch a show that doesn't force a narrative down our throats and instead creates a visceral experience of a past era.
>>
>>67892587
Well, the pilot was pretty much a 2-hour Scorcese-directed movie.
>>
>>67892466
they used it on all those real name musicians and songs that play in the background
>>
>you will never be a braindead American simpleton who chooses to watch Quantico or The Walking Dead over Vinyl

Thank fucking God.
>>
>Terence Winter rushed to finish Boardwalk Empire for Vinyl

lol
>>
>>67892684
Vinyl is total fucking acclaim-bait bullshit. Critics gave it good reviews (essentailly because it's an expensive HBO period show with an all-star cast) despite acknowledging it was mediocre.
>>
>>67892684
Why do losers do this? Defend what they're watching by putting others down.

>Y-y-yeah? Well I watch Vinyl and you're watching PLEB SHIT like Quantico! Fucking loser!
It's pathetic.
>>
I think they care more about making a great piece of television than they care about turning a profit. You can see it in the stylistic choices and general approach (or lack thereof) to storytelling.
>>
Vinyl is the most patrician show airing right now.
>>
>>67892703
More like HBO didn't want to pay $5m/ep for a poorly-rated show any more. Sadly, they've used that money to create an even more expensive, more poorly-rated show.
>>
>>67892736
The pilot wasn't the best, sure. But it's getting better and better with each episode.
>>
>>67892736
Except it really isn't. If it were, we'd see a concrete narrative instead of tons of indulgent mood-piece scenes. This show feels like a massive fuck-you to critics.
>>
I stopped watching after the pilot, did they ever focus on the murder of the fat fuck or is it more on their struggling record industry?
>>
>>67892742
He makes a good point though. Quantico and The Walking Dead are completely brain-dead shows while Vinyl has some sort of artistic merit at least. Choosing to watch Quantico or The Walking Dead over Vinyl does say a great deal about a person. None of it good.
>>
>>67892883
>Choosing to watch Quantico or The Walking Dead over Vinyl does say a great deal about a person
That's they're not dumb enough to pay $10/mo for HBO, who currently only have one worthwhile scripted show in a sea of mediocrity.
>>
>>67892665
Was it a pro-italian pro-crime piece of shit with drugs and whores?
>>
Nothing amazing but is definitely watchable.
I enjoyed Boardwalk Empire much more than this but whatever.
>>
>>67892953
Oh and, all other shows in that list besides last man on earth and twd are complete garbage.
>>
To put in context how much of a bomb this show is, they could have given each person watching the series $100 and came out $30 million on top.

This is the sort of show that will return profits slowly over time as people recommend it to their friends and read about it everywhere. It will leave a legacy on the same scale as The Wire and The Sopranos.

lol. The Sopranos was a monster hit when it was first airing, and The Wire is basically unprecedented in that regard.

Because now Netflix, Amazon, Showtime etc are all competing with HBO for prestige projects, and HBO's development seems like a complete clusterfuck (see: Westworld, Utopia, even fucking Leftovers)
>>
>>67892158

wages(the actors are signed and paid for 2 seasons so they were going to get a second regardless)
music royalties

they were probably hoping for a prestige hit like the sopranos or the wire, should have invested in another genre show to compliment GoT
>>

Also, HBO are notorious starfuckers, which inflates the budgets of anything they do, especially now there's competition.

Isn't the 70s

The 70s are the worst decades of the 20th century. Literlaly base a show on any other decade and it would be better.

No one wants to here 70s songs, Jesus chist kill me, I am almost 40 and it's been boomers reminiscing the 60s and 70s non stop my entire life.

Hopefully it's the beginning of the end of these insanely expensive vanity projects. At least GoT has a good reason for its budget, they use it to do shit that would otherwise be impossible on TV.

It's a sad fact that some of The CW's shows are more creative than HBO's bullshit and they clearly have a tiny budget.

>>67893224
That's because the plebs on here are busy watching TWD while telling themselves they're only watching it ironically.

This will invariably cause apoplectic sycophants to crawl out of the woodwork and start yelling, but it's a show that pretends it's a melodrama and isn't propelled by half-formed and inconsistent mysteries and world-building that doesn't even function properly as a melodrama let alone a meditation on religion.
>>
Girls is straight up better than Vinyl.

The new cool guy tv formula of having a tortured soul character with a cast of famous movie stars/old actors who rely on meme appeal to get by with generic and stale cinematography is being forced so hard by top tv execs right now and I can't fucking wait for them to realise it only werks if you have an intimate main cast with a plot that revolves around them instead of the other way round.
True detective (arguably the show that popularised this) is the best example of this new formula.
Season 1 was great until like episode 5 (that's because Pizza isn't a good of a writer as he thought he was and some would say corey gave his script the dramatic push it needed to make it look better than it was but whatever) whereas season 2 was a complete piece of shit due to just following the aforementioned formula 1:1.
Again , Fargo season one was loved by plebs just because the formula felt fresh to them. On a rewatch (or first watch if you're patrician) the dialouge is cringy , the cinematography is good but nothing we haven't seen before , the actors are decent but mainly watchable because 'woah it's that midget from the hobbit and the guy from bad santa! I used to love them when I was a pleb at 16 but now i'm a grown up who watches HBO shows so they must be good actors if they're on HBO!'
The cinematography felt boring from the get go and season 2 solidified the doubt many had after watching the show and for the future of television.
Says what you want about Lena Dunham. Say she's a cunt , i'll agree with you 100%. But she knows how to write a show that captures real intimate drama and right now that's what matters.

Obnoxious or not it is still one of the most interesting and well made shows airing currently. I'm not saying that's a great thing, and God knows I'm not expecting people around here to agree with me, but it often has more to chew on thematically and stylistically than 90% of what's on right now.

>>67894949
>It's inherently 'obnoxious' due to the setting
Nah, you've got similar shows that aren't full of irritating characters and have actual jokes (e.g. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Master of None).

The real problem with Girls was always the breathless press attention, not the show itself. The show was finely tuned for the demographics of privileged critics to adore it and everyone else to find it just fucking annoying and empty. There's a reason its ratings are super shitty.

>>
>>67895530
Girls largely appeals to upper-middle class "creative" LA/NYers who can relate. To anyone else, it's tedious naval-gasing which is not satirical, clever or entertaining, because everyone knows these sorts of people are vapid self-centred pieces of shit.

But that's fine. The problem is that the narrow brand of upper-middle-class creative LA/NYers that dominate the media were vigorously masturbating over how clever and original and amazing it was.
>>
>>67894949
But Girls doesn't have a handle on reality. You're seeing Lena Dunham's sordid fantasy.
>>
>>67895894
The CW has slowly but surely stopped casting ridiculously gorgeous actors who couldn't act for shit. iZombie/Crazy Ex-Girlfriend/Jane the Virgin are all pretty fucking amazing and don't have those problems.
>>
>>67894851
Girls is a good show
>>
>>67895952
You seem to be ignoring the fact that the show expressly shows the characters being vapid self-centered pieces of shit. There is a large element of navel-gazing (what art isn't) but at the very least the show is aware of this fact on some level. The amount of self-awareness Lena Dunham has seems to be a constantly moving target but the show consistently has effective storytelling, realistic character moments, and interesting thematic content that you can interpret in different ways. It's an inconsistent show a lot of the time, but it hits the mark more times than it doesn't and when it does it is better than the vast majority of television on right now.

come on

No, I've acknowledged that fact. You're missing my point, which is that isn't interesting or entertaining to people outside of a narrow bubble, it's just tiresome, obvious and obnoxious.

It's a shit drama and a shit comedy.

This, everything on cw is a fucking soap opera

Bobby Cannavale is not a big name. Not for anybody. The dudes been a supporting actor his whole career and not a good one like Bernthal.
>>
>>67892158
I tried watching this with my family but we couldn't make it past the first episode.

The wire as pleb? Your crazy

Life and Times of Tim for patrician tier please

Compared to David Simon's other projects it's pleb as fuck.

Fuck no

You need to add John Adams to patrician.

Homicide: Life on the Street is his most pleb work you retard.
>>
>>67896626
And I'm saying that at a bare minimum it's interesting because it is an unfiltered look into said narrow bubble. And a lot of the time is portraying that narrow bubble with all the disdain you seem to share for it. You may not like it but it's anything but obvious.
>>
>>67896205
I'd agree with most of this but for me the characters are repellent to the point where I found the show hard to bear.
>>
>>67896792
He didn't have that much to do with that, it was based on his book and adapted by others.

FOX probably makes more money off FXX reruns than actual new episodes. Same with Family Guy.
>>
>>67892587
half of the budget went to olivia's nude scene
>>
>>67896855
That's a fair enough point. I find that a show with repellent characters (that's done well) can be refreshing and although most of the protagonists on Girls behave abhorrently there's still a level of nuance and subtlety to their twisted thought processes that makes the characters believable. The show gets ragged on for being out of touch but the way the characters act on this show is much closer to reality than most.

Half the budget went to the construction of her giant merkin. I heard she demanded it be made from the first pubic hair of many thousand hasidic jew preteens.

>iZombie
iZombie is fun schlock. Also they cast beautiful actors that have so much charisma and fit well together but they're still bad actors.

HBO struck a deal with Amazo Prime to license some of their 10+ year old shows for a cut of the profit.

Accuracy in lieu of either celebration or condemnation but I really did find myself becoming angry bearing witness to it.

Fuck it. Maybe it really is generational/self condemnation from Dunham or maybe she revels in it. It's very hard to tell and I suppose even that on its' own more than qualifies it as being worth watching. Gonna have to revisit. No pain no gain.

Switch the wire and entourage.

Robert Plant casting in first ep was excruciating.

Season 5 episode 2 of Girls is easily one of the best tv episodes of the current era of television , trust me.
>>

ITS CALLED SIX FEET UNDER

WATCH THAT SHIT, PLEB
>>
>>67897583
The show has really turned into a series of vignettes lately so it bears sticking with it even if you aren't feeling a given episode because the highs are really high.

Peter Grant wasn't so bad at least.
>>

I watched the fIrst episode and it didn't grip me. MIght download it when it's done, it reminded me of a edgy Nashville

SFU had one great season and four seasons of increasingly over-the-top and tedious empty melodrama and then a decent final season.
>>
Shit, even the Wire wasn't that popular when it was on the air. Give it a little time and Vinyl will be regarded as an HBO classic.

It's largely dependent on how this season plays out though. I'm going to be so mad if Richie doesn't catch at least ONE break before the finale.

It was just too damn long.

I'm surprised more people didn't tune in after the Olivia Wilde nude scene last week.

Am I the only one that LIKES 2 hr long pilots? Feels like a mini movie senpai.
>>
>>67899255
The Wire is basically unique in having a massive jump in hype and popularity after like 4 seasons out of nowhere. That's unlikely to happen again.

The only other I can think of right now is BSG. Which I liked.

Lost? Fringe? Terra Nova (kek)?
