Now that we're living in the sci-fi dark ages, which season of red dwarf is best?

I've been meaning to watch this show from start to finish. Right now I've only seen maybe 15 scattered episodes from all over and I don't think I'll stop being a smeghead until I've seen them all. In one of them Rimmer was gone and there was a woman, what's up with that?

Probably something to do with living in the first world. The only real non-white/western country that comes to mind when I think science-fiction is Japan, and they're one of the most first-world countries out there, and rather westernized to boot.

America was the country that really made sci-fi big, with their army of pulp-writers creating a sea of ideas to inspire future writers, and it's also probably worth mentioning that many big American names in science-fiction are quite well educated people, such as Isaac Asimov.

The combination of being educated and forward thinking, as well as economically thriving, allowing for a whole lot of frivolous storytelling is what allowed science-fiction to take off in the first world, or as you also might say 'white' countries.
>>
>>67892610
I dont watch anime so I dunno how japs do scifi. From the minimal Ive seen its just people on space ships.

Battle Royale was conceptually scifi dystopia. Other than that I'm all out really.

Big robots fighting isnt really scifi, or maybe im being dismissive and its potentially where humanity could head

Japs don't have loads of famous written sci-fi, but they do more than anime. In particular I think that they're the only ones who really executed true cyberpunk movies.

With literature the only major work that comes to mind is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, which you might have heard about here because it got a relatively popular anime adaption. It's interesting because it was written by a historian and is a commentary on European history and government more than anything else.

As for their anime, the early big names such as Tezuka wrote for kids but incorporated themes that would be considered relatively mature by our standards, and this blend of kid appeal and mature stuff has always been a staple. Later on edgelords like Go Nagai got violent and tried to pull off deep plots to go together with their crazy-ass robots and demons, then genius autists like Tomino combined edgy robot wars with Robert Heinlein and created Gundam.

Anime sci-fi tends to be kind of a combination of American golden age science-fiction influences on top of Japanese kid comic books, which weren't always as immature as you'd expect. You get odd combinations of wacky humour and robot fights together with severe anti-war messages and crazy ass Arthur C. Clarke endings.

Went to one of Craig Charles' gigs last year, was pretty based. Wish he was doing the new robot wars too. Living the dream brother

I'm imagining how much /pol/ hate it would get if it came out now though

>Main character is a black guy who gets all the girls, is the moralistic person and lusts after a white woman (who wants to be impregnated by him initially)
>white guys are either a pathetic spineless cuck, or a subservient robot who has to obey the black guy

In all seriousness, it's probably my favourite TV show. It never gets the level of praise Blackadder, OFAH, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted do. But it makes me laugh twice as much

>In all seriousness, it's probably my favourite TV show. It never gets the level of praise Blackadder, OFAH, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted do. But it makes me laugh twice as much

scifi comedy is so few and far between AND severely underrated. and back in the 80s and 90s there was basically just this and that hitchhikers guide to the galaxy tv short series.

now theres a fair few scifi comedy cartoons, but red dwarf as pioneer as fuck.

I liked it myself, but I was born in the 80s and JFK started getting less revered as time went on. Not that people don't think of him fondly, but his extra-marital affairs were well known. Actually I think the episode showed him making a big sacrifice to put time back into place, taking the honorable way out and so on.

I do recall when the episodes premiered on my local PBS station, the program manager had to give a disclaimer saying how Brits have a different take on US history and meant no disrespect.

What's interesting is that the show stars two black people, and race is not mentioned even once in the show

Kinda comfy
>>
>have great memories of being a utter alcholic and drinking cases of beer while watching this.
Good times
>>
Craig is pretty much just a working class, relatable, down to earth guy. His race is never really mentioned or a fundamental part of his character, so whatever

It's quite rare to have a scouser be a main character like that back in the day.

Hes not that black. Hes like half or a quatre or something.

Craig was an arty hipster I read. Like a middle low class arty hipster. Lister is like a parody of him in real life who's more Warhol than scouser.

One of my favorite shows of all time.

SEASON SOUND OFF
>1: Underrated and while not laugh out loud, is extremely good in its own right
>2: Great season with some of the best episodes
>3: Great season that somehow manages to successfully change the whole aesthetic without killing the charm
>4: Very good season in general
>5: God tier
>6: One or two weaker episodes, but the rest are some of the best in the entire series
>7: Garbage
>8: Somehow even worse
>BTE/9: Caps a trilogy of shit seasons with even more shit, and a massive middle finger ending
>X: Great return to form, very solid season with one of the best episodes under its belt (The Beginning)
>>
>>67891981
Dimension Jump, Justice, and The Beginning
>>
>>67892180
In the series, Rimmer leaves and an alternate version of Christine Kochanski, Lister's crush, comes on board. The actress is stunning, but she doesn't fit the show.
>>
>>67891981
i like the episode where the mail ship catches up to them and has a letter to rimmer saying that his dad is dead and he's bummed out that he'll never get the opportunity of prove him wrong about him

also
>Good evening. Here is the news on Friday, the 27th of Geldof. Archaeologists near Mount Sinai have discovered what is believed to be a missing page from the Bible. The page is presently being carbon dated in Bonn. If genuine it belongs at the beginning of the Bible and is believed to read "To my darling Candy. All characters portrayed within this book are fictitious and any resemblance to persons living or dead is purely coincidental." The page has been universally condemned by church leaders.

>Inquisitor

FUCKING THANK YOU

No one ever mentions that glorious episode. Inquisitor was easily their best enemy, too. His origin was god tier.
>Go to the end of time
>Realize God doesn't exist
>Decides the meaning of life is to live a good life
>Scours realty for those that squandered their lives and judges them by using their own personalities
>Replaces those who squandered their lives with a sperm who didn't win the race
>>
What are some more sitcoms where the main characters don't really like each other and are basically together out of circumstance?

Red Dwarf made me love this dynamic since I know very few sitcoms that utilize it. Too much touchy-feely shit.

Tfw I watched it dubbed to my country language...
And they did such a fucking good job, its unwatchable for me in the original.
>>
Love this show, so quotable. When I was little my Dad recorded them on VHS and I watched them all the time.

>tfw me and my Dad love this show so much we went to a convention to meet Chris Barrie (Rimmer)
>tfw my Dad was all giddy, got a photograph with him
>tfw Rimmer called me "Me laddo'
>tfw we now have a framed picture of Arnold Rimmer in my families living room

Can't wait for the new series this year.

The thing with those personality crossover episodes is the fun they had filming it really seeps through to the viewer. Like when they met their good and evil versions and when they did the bodyswap.

and the part where the polymorph turns into rimmers mum and lister has sex with her

> He's so energetic! I honestly thought my false teeth were going to fall out!
Rimmer: How lovely.
Polymorph: The positions he bent me into...!
Rimmer: Terrific. That sounds enchanting. Well done.

When the ship is split into a good and bad version, the version of Rimmer as some fucked up BDSM crossdresser was the strangest thing I'd ever seen in the show. Though immediately after seeing it:
