Rick should have turned around and went back to Alexandria after the first group, definitely after the second one, knowing that the Saviors knew he killed their men and were out and about. Never even should have encountered the last 3 road blocks.
How could they have gotten the RV & other vehicles set up at the spot where they were going to walk without being really obvious/loud? They could have ventured into the woods at any point along the road and any route, but they just happen to wander into that carefully orchestrated scene? Eugene was obviously captured and knew the plan but, unless he happened to know and tell them the mile marker where they went in how would they know what general area to even set the trap? And does the forest scene depends completely on someone coming up with the plan of going through the woods while one person stays with the RV?
Was this part ad hoc? If so that makes it even less believable.
And they didn't have a compass, so I highly doubt they were going in a straight line having to go around trees and brush. Not to mention they were navigating by moonlight. The best they could do is go in a general direction but would have been all over the place.
Why would Rick even try to keep going to Hilltop? I get Maggie is sick, but obviously the saviors knew where they were going and would have just gone to get them if they’d made it past a roadblock.
It would have made much more sense to have a trap at Hilltop waiting for Rick.

But the forest scene? That was either planned or ad hoc.
If it was planned that means they'd have to depend on someone in the group suggesting that they keep driving the RV while the rest try and make it through the forest. And they'd have to come up with that plan in a certain stretch of road so they enter the forest in just the right area, capture the RV quickly to get it into position, then hope the group walks into a relatively small area so they could whistle at them like Hunger Games.
If it was ad hoc it would depend on them capture Eugene, which he obviously was. Then for Eugene to be able to tell them about where they entered the forest and the direction they were going. The Saviors would then have to get all of those vehicles in place (in the middle of a forest) without tipping Rick off by making too much noise or too many lights.

Thats the point though, season seven is the start of a fresh chapter for Rick and everybody beginning with the fallout of the cliffhanger from season 6 Finale, I'm British and still call it season and Finale, god help me...but this episode ended just right for me, I now can't wait for season (See) seven, I don't like much episodic tv but this has me hooked, I even enjoyed Fear The Walking Dead, it was certainly different but in my mind, no less engaging.

That's not Negan's style. Negan doesn't act until he's good and ready - trying to maximize the effect of whatever he does.
Case in point - the reason he doesn't just have his guys waste Rick's group is because he realizes they're potential - they haven't just survived the apocalypse, they've thrived and rebuilt, and those are the kinds of people Negan wants working for his empire.
So he sets up this elaborate little get together to hammer home three simple points:
1) Rick's group is hilariously outmanned, outgunned, and outmatched
2) Rick's group works for him now
3) Causing problems for Negan will be harshly punished (cue beating Glenn's head into a bloody pulp)
