I took a class at uni called media and society. The professor explained how selling ad space fucks with show quality. Apparently a large amount of people watching means little unless you can frame it in demographics. Who watches is more important then does that group watch it in large numbers. Is is soccer moms? Nascar dads? Urban youth? stuff and stuff like that. Basically stereotypes. Having info like that sells the shows to advertisers so they can know what ads to run. If it has varied and wide appeal it will probably get cancelled.

I think it went for 4 seasons and then got cancelled out of fucking nowhere even though it was doing well. So instead of them finishing the show in a 5th season they scrambled to make a couple made of TV movies to try and tie things up the best they could.
They literally had season 4 completed, and totally finished, and as they were about to start shooting season 5 they were told they got cancelled. The TV show was left on a season 4 cliffhanger that was suposed ot lead into Season 5.

Jodelle Ferland: I absolutely love the relationship between Five and the Android. My scenes with Zoie were some of my favourites, where it was just a one-on-one conversation with Five and the Android. The dialogue was just so much fun to play around with.
The thing about the Android is that even though she’s a genius, she knows everything about the ship and make calculations in her head in a split second, she has sort of a child-like perspective about the world. She doesn’t understand simple jokes or metaphors and I think that’s why she gets along so well with Five because she has that sort of younger perspective. That’s what the Android and Five have in common and they have a really adorable friendship; I love seeing them interact and I love playing those scenes.
Interviewer: Going forward, will we see Five in a supporting role for the Android?
Jodelle Ferland: Yeah, for sure. They have a really sweet relationship and the Android is definitely struggling with, as you said, “feelings about feelings,” and she needs people to figure it out with her. Five is definitely there with her to help get her through it.

Actually, other than not explaining how the drive system works, the science of navigating open space in Firefly is a lot more believable than most Sci-Fi shows.
