As far as raw strength goes he is on par with Hulk and maybe Thanos.

In his early stories Superman wasn't retarded-move-a-planet strong. He also couldn't fly, only jump long distances Iike the Hulk.
When Fawcett Comics hired Bill Parker to create Captain Marvel (Shazam) they wanted to out Superman DC so Cap was stronger and could fly instead of jumping.
After Cap started outselling them, DC retooled Superman to be faster, stronger and able to fly.
Funny story, the first cover for Superman shows him picking up a car full of gangsters with both arms and smashing it in to a rock. The first cover for Captain Marvel shows him throwing a similar car full of gangsters into a wall one-handed.
