I think what makes Poe and Finn potentially great characters is that they're gate crashing on the characters that are so entrenched and established.
What works about them is that they have no previous connections and they aren't obliged to behave in a firmly pre-established way.

Finn and Poe were both ejected before the crash. It's hard to notice because of the editing, but Finn wakes up like a mile away from the crash and then walks over. Poe was ejected too, he says as much at the Resistance base.
