Nah, Visually it's beautiful except for when they fuck up and pan the camera so close to the painted background but the beginning and end stories aren't that interesting.
Was it Kobayashi's first color film, because it feels like he going for a Wizard of Oz thing were he makes everything colorful just because he can now. The opening credits are just colored ink in water.

Also kinda funny Seppuku's name was changed to Hara-kiri because people were more familiar with that term despite it being the opposite these days.

Entry level arthouse for IMDb nu-cinephiles. It caresses the viewer with normie content and lack of sincerity. It's one of the best known examples of proto-capeshit. A middling war epic disguised as something else, so it passes a false illusion of profundity.

It's imbecile to suggest that it's at the top of Kurosawa's flickography let alone at the top of the catalog of japan' s kinoramas.

That'll be amazing. I'm jealous!

As much as I give Birmingham shit for being a cultural wasteland we do have screenings of The Bicycle Theives, 12 Angry Men and Tokyo Story this month so it's not all bad. The Electric Cinema is basically keeping movies in the city alive on its own.

I feel the same about Suffolk in general. Bury St. Edmunds is doing well, but when I saw the screening of Ida was dubbed I actually wrote a letter to them asking what their reasoning for this was and what they hoped to achieve, long term. To my surprise they actually responded with a lot of thought. Probably won't change anything, mind.

>>67808374
Same, it seemed crazy to me. Basically, yes. They said they didn't necessarily want to do it but did so because they weren't sure if subtitle would be offputting. I said in my letter that it's unlikely that anybody interested enough to know about and want to watch Ida would want to see it dubbed. Mainstream audiences would not be interested in it subbed or dubbed so why alienate the viewerbase even more with an inadequate version of the film? I didn't go and watch it and let them know this decision cost them a ticket and they seemed quite upset by this.

I think that the Japanese are the only ones who really 'got' what cyberpunk was about.

The average american 'cyberpunk' is just science-fiction with a layer of dirt on top or something. To be truly punk you have to throw a giant middle finger in the face of all things conventional, including all the stuff we take for granted like traditional narrative structure and flow, and how things are meant to look and sound.

If half of the average moviegoing public straight up can't make it to the end of your movie you've succeeded in creating punk. Anything less is poser-tier.

>>

If you liked them check out the Kitano film A Scene at the Sea.

In fact, how has Kitano not been mentioned yet?
>>
What does /tv/ think of Linda Linda Linda? It's extra comfy, probably in my 25 favorite films
>>
>>67808727
Made enough sense for me, and story's for plebs anyway.

>>67808801
I was expecting Kitano to be among the first replies. I recently rewatched Violent Cop and liked it much more the second time around. I think Kitano's one of the best directors working right now when it comes to handling violence. I don't think anybody can make a gunfight that hits harder than Kitano at his best.

I also watched Brother for the first time. Seeing American and Japanese gangster values compared directly was really interesting. I love cross-cultural movies, and the ending made me feel.

I think I'd add Violent Cop to what I consider to be essential Kitano-core, alongside Sonatine and A Scene at the Sea.
>>
>>67808801
I've seen it already, it's one of my favs from him. I really love his obsession for the sea, and even though I was a bit disoriented at first because ASATS has a more "urban" portrayal of the sea than usual, in the end I enjoyed just as much as the others.
The story that goes with it was very compelling aswell
>>
>>67808935
Hana-Bi is my favourite of his, although it's very close between that and Sonatine.

>I don't think anybody can make a gunfight that hits harder than Kitano at his best.

Nor a baseball bat to the skull. That part always makes me wince. It's horrendous to watch.

Even moments like when that innocent girl at the bus stop gets shot. Bystanders get shot in films all the time, but making hers so brutal and unnecessary carries so much more weight.
>>
>>67808476
Here's some stuff would like to talk about.

What do you think about Oshima's response to the classicism of Ozu, Mizoguchi and the other old guard directors in his film The Ceremony?

Imamura's version of The Ballad of Narayama is very interesting as a comparison to Kinoshita's. Especially when you consider the fact that the adaptations came for both when they were more mature directors at similar stages in refinement of their themes.

I find Kiju Yoshida's films really fascinating in their use of extreme framing and overexposure but the messages in his films seem to be too narrow in scope to really stand the test of time. (but it has been over a year since I last watched one of them and I might understand it better if I gave them another watch.).

Hopefully I'll get some responses in the next 9 hours before I get back on.
>>
>>67809265

The first movie starts out a bit slow trying to establish all the characters and the setting and shit, but it really starts getting crazy after the first half. The 2nd movie is fucking perfect and you have no idea how it can be topped. The 3rd movie is even more perfect than the second, every minute is flawless. The human condition is seriously one of the best movies I've ever seen in my life. It is definitely in my top 10 and it is in the top 3 greatest WWII films (along with come and see and the ascent). I never really cried watching a movie, but this movie got me really emotional in the end. Full of feels.

I've only seen Sonatine and Hanabi. The former is probably my favorite film. Hana-bi is much more distinct and personal but I got more enjoyment from Sonatine. I love that they're more or less the same movie made at distinctly different times in his life, chiefly before and after a suicide attempt.

The way both movies depict vacations is really touching. I've always though there's something depressing about running away from your life for a week or so knowing it will only end, that very fleeting happiness you tease yourself with.
>>
Why does literally every Japanese movie have a rape scene and/or rape subplot or other abuse of women. Every single one.
>>
>>67808994
A huge appeal of Sonatine for me is how plain and almost boring the violence is in the first part of the film. Most movies try to shock the audience by going bigger and more brutal, but thats just more exciting in a different way. The matter of fact way people are constantly being shot and blown up in Sonatine is a lot more shocking, and sad. You really feel how dead the protagonist is inside and how little heroism and coolness there is to his lifestyle like other movies would depict
