Frank Darabont could have turned TWD into a movie and have sequel after sequel after sequel based on the story arcs, yet he saw the potentionality in it as a show. He even commented that he wanted season one to feel like a 45 minute film.
I think if the Walking Dead were a movie, it'd receive the same criticisms as any zombie flick. It would have been another summer block buster before fading into obscurity.
