Will the new Star Trek series in 2017 take place in the new JJ Abrams Trek-verse, or the old classic Trek universe?
>>
>>67796722
Who cares it'll be cancelled after one season.
>>
>>67796722
hopefully it'll be about interesting characters and feature well written scripts.

i could give a fuck about continuity.
>>
>>67796722
I have a feeling it will be shit bit not Enterprise level shit.
>>
>>67796722

The Abrams Trek characters could use a show. Into Darkness tried to recreate scenes from Wrath of Khan, but part of the reason it failed was because these alternate universe characters barely know each other. Spock can't go from hating Kirk's guts to "I have and always shall be your friend" over the course of only two movies.

Leave it in the old continuity, but go back to basics: alpha quadrant shenanigans with the races we know. No more Borg, and no time travel bullshit.

>it's a Barclay calls Troi episode.

How little you know

Confirmed for 22nd century setting so as not to conflict with any series
>>
>>67797560
Sorry, I'm sure tons of people are going to pay for a CBS streaming service (which BTW still has fucking commercials!)
>>
>>67797516
It still blows my mind that Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry himself, has a race like the Ferengi in it.
>>
>>67798450
I (and MANY other Star Trek fans, or 'Trekkers' as we prefer to be called ('Trekkies' is also okay though not preferred)) will pay the CBS All Access monthly fee just for a new Star Trek series and consider it a bargain. Without putting it into the context of subscribing to a streaming service, if someone asked ANY true Trekker "would you pay $6/month for a new Star Trek series?" the answer would ALWAYS be yes.

Details?

They were Yankee traders.
>>
>>67798570
...I don't follow.
>>
>>67798499
It's easy because they are a one-dimensional caricature of an incorrect society compared to the enlightened, tolerant Federation. Like every species/civilization in TNG.
>>
>>67798509
If it is really fucking good I'll buy the dvd. Anything is better than modern Doctor Who.
>>
>>67798621
The Ferengi are similar to the ocean-going Yankee traders of eighteenth and nineteenth century America, who in this case sail the galaxy in search of mercantile and territorial opportunity.
>>

>>67798745
What does that have to do with Roddenberry?
>>
>>67796722

Hopefully original universe, but I wouldn't be surprised that if it would end up being set on jar-jar verse.

>>67798553

Pilot will premier on TV, all subsequent episodes will be their premium streaming service only in US, but hey will sell it as regular TV show for foreign markets.

>>67798622

They were meant to be the new villains in TNG. They turned out too silly be credible threat so they turned 'em into comic relief and came up with Cardassians.
>>
>>67799167
Why wouldn't Roddenberry, who modeled his shows on CS Forester's Horatio Hornblower series, feature Yankee trader allegories? It's perfectly appropriate and not surprising or controversial in the least.

>Bryan Fuller
as much as i love most of his other shows this show is going to canceled pretty quick.

Fuck
>>
>>67799295
You do know that Bryan Fuller wrote some of the best, most memorable episodes of DS9 and Voyager, right?
>>
>>67799167
>What does that have to do with Roddenberry?

Star Trek Federation is perfect society. All that utopian socialist stuff was put on TNG-era federation by Gene Roddenberry. Federation is Roddenberrys utopia, Ferengi were it's anti-thesis, capitalist society that will hold personal profit as it's highest ideal instead of greater good and all the other bullshit Federation stood for. Capitalism being codified as their religion and all that shit.

What future show runner has said in past...

>On 2 March 2009 Fuller told iF Magazine that he is pushing for a new Star Trek TV series based on "old style" Star Trek. In the interview he stated that "I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams' team I want to create another Star Trek series and have an idea that I'm kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude. I loved Voyager and Deep Space Nine, but they seem to have lost the '60s fun and I would love to take it back to its origin."

>In 2013, Fuller added, "I think there's something very exciting about the new J.J. Abrams-verse, and there's also kind of an interesting reinvention. How would The Next Generation evolve from that? Where would that be? Where would that go? But there's also... Star Trek is such a big universe, and there are so many places to go with it. I have a very specific idea that I would love to do. We'll see if I ever get the opportunity."

Voyager and DS9 both dipped into the 60s fun element regularly, though not in any Bryan Fuller-written episodes.

This is the guy who made Hannibal Lecter gay. He's going to ruin Star Trek. He should not be showrunner.

He wrote Bride of Chaotica. I'd say that is one of better done comedy episodes in Trek. While he wrote plenty of good episodes for Voyager, lot of what he did was Borg episodes... those with First Contact ruined the Borg pretty badly. Removed the horribly alien aspect from them.
>>
>>67801653
Bride of Chaotica wasn't like original Star Trek at all and seemed to be something that someone hostile or foreign to Star Trek might write. It was really terrible. Star Trek isn't fucking Flash Gordon or Perils of Pauline. It's never been that.

It's tribute to cheap serials that paved the way to modern sci-fi movies and shows. While it's not like TOS, it's still one of obviously comedic episodes of Trek. Way less cringe worthy than Rascals for example. While Trek is heavy on Shakespeare, it's heavily implied that shitty pulp has become classic drama like Shakespeare or ancient Greek classic literature. TNG had plenty of holodeck episodes focusing on shitty pulp detective stories, Bride of Chaotica is just continuation of that.
