Eye's Wide Shut is my favorite movie at the moment. I think that Kubrick was reaching for a new way to tell a story or experience a story through filmmaking, he was trying to push the medium as far as he could by making something that works more on a subconscious level than something that is clear on the surface. It's the only movie that I've seen that I keep coming back to over and over and over again something about the off beat pacing of it is really intense to me

This is so wrong. Kubrick read Traumnovelle hundreds of times, the film is essentially a modern adaptation of the novella.

If you are interested you should read Eyes Wide Open by Frederic Raphael to get an idea of how obsessed Kubrick was with the source material
>>
>>67796814
It's up to the viewer to decide
>>
>>67796597
It's absolutely inconsequential, well I guess it did achieve one thing, that being tarnishing rubrics legacy.

Nothing in it works. Tom Cruise walks around looking bored. He stands in rooms and does nothing as the plot is slowly explained to him. This would be fine, but the plot itself is a joke. Ok Cruise attends a party. It's well show. Looks good. Doesn't have the splendour of something like Barry Lyndon though. Then we have the boring scenes that made me feel like they were there to simply waste time when Cruise talks to his wife. Oh wow, they have secrets! Who would have though that people who are married could hide things from one another. Then we have the surrealist illuminati party. Once again, it's well show but nothing happens. The scenes tell us nothing. There are perverted rich people who have secrets? whowuldathink. At the end of the film nothing has changed. Nothing has happened actually. It may as well have been 20 minutes long. I'm sure you could cut it down to that and not lose any 'substance' if only there was any in this joke.

Cruise was awful. The supporting cast were awful. The outdoor shots looked absolutely disgusting. Like the film was shot on a poor recreation of New York. The story tells us nothing. There is no resolve. There is no plot actually.

I have no idea how anyone could think that they didn't waste their time watching this awful failure.

top kek. They have no relationship. If you weren't told that they're married you could never have actually guessed it. They share a room and talk. That is the hight of their 'relationship'.

>and the theme of dreams, fantasy and infidelity
Dreams and fantasy? wut? Infidelity sure, but that's handled in such a on the nose way. It also doesn't tell us anything other than 'married people have secrets' which is honesty as simple as a theme can get.

>making something that works more on a subconscious level than something that is clear on the surface.
I'm not sure what this is about. The plot is literally Tom going to an illuminati party and then coming home. Nothing happens apart from that. Was the party real? Did it all actually happen? ooOOooOOOo spooky. In the end though, it doesn't matter if it did or didn't happen, since it didn't change a thing. It may as well not have happened. The entire story art is resolved when Tom smokes some weed with his wife.

>It's the only movie that I've seen that I keep coming back to over and over and over again something about the off beat pacing of it is really intense to me

Also, the point of EWS I think it was to show the entire world that cinema can be used as a medium to deliver a wide share of feelings instead of just Worrying about "muh story".

The odd representation of New York was part of this whole sense of surrealism that Kubrick wanted to convey. One of the most populated cities in the world can suddenly become a creepy, abandoned, obscure, wicked land.

>Eyes Wide Shut
When are you conscious and aware, yet eyes closed? When you are dreaming. The party at the mansion parallels the party they attend at the beginning. Sex and infidelity, some of the same people are at both, one they wear literal masks, but people at the other party wear figurative masks. One interpretation is that the party at the mansion was his dream imagining of the actual party from before. I mean I think it obviously did happen, but thematically they may be the same for Kubrick... just one is more honest and spoopy.

>>67798238

>>
>>67797918
the film is not about Illuminati or cults or anything like that. that is the tinfoil hat answer

the real meaning was kubrick wanted a realistic portrayal of relationships of intimacy and lust. this is why he needed to hire a real life couple.

he finds out about his wife's desires. which shocks him, and sends him out of control. he then becomes unhinged, and goes out desperately soul searching and looking for answers. which never come. but by not getting any answers this also gives him the answers he needs

for 99% of people life is boring. there are no cults. or secret sex orgies. see this is the desire. desire for more. for something interesting his first taste of it, and he can't handle it just like everyone else.

by the end it sums up neatly, and he sobs, he retreats and surrenders back to his wife. he never cheated because he was never jealous, he wants to be with and live a normal life. the journey of that night proved that to him. and very last line they need to "fuck" sums it all up because everything is about sex.

i could go more into it but i can't be bothered.

It was filmed in London, because Kubrick had an autistic phobia of New York City. He felt that it was too dangerous of a place, and always worried that he would get killed if he set foot there. Funny thing is....he's a native New Yorker. Yet, he lived in England so long, that he had even developed a bit of a British accent. You can't separate genius from weird, sometimes.

I fell in love with this movie immediately. Even the soundtrack, with the Gyorgi Ligetti piano music is bone chilling. Yes, it's vague in parts. But, only if you refuse to think about it. I even imported the Region 3 Hong Kong disc, back in the day, because it was the only truly uncensored DVD at the time. The Region 1 USA release had the orgy scene censored digitally, and the Region 2 UK disc had the Hindu chant during the orgy censored, because many Indians in the UK took exception. I wonder if they ever released it totally uncensored here in the US?

I wish there was a way to save Tom Cruise from Scientology.

There was this rumour that he wanted to escape it to be more present as a father to his daughter...
That sounded like a good reason. Don't know what happened with that...

This was a pretty gread horror movie. It was good until the end, but hey, what else is new?

I liked how she was
willing to burn bridges, suck an evil dick, and murder her close friends

just to make it.

His acting made him less present as a father, not so much his scientology. He actually saw scientology as a way to connect more with her by getting her involved in the religion, which katie Holmes really didn't like.

He's an extremely dedicated actor and often spends far more time on set than is necessary. This was a major cause of tension. Source: hung out drinking w/ k holmes once

when he entered the house, he repeated the password, which is how they knew. anyone who knew there wasn't one, wouldn't feel the need to repeat it.

They probably did, but the callousness with which Ziegler talks about her is meant to imply that whether they literally murdered her or not the wealthy elite still constantly exploit and discard people and are to some degree culpable either way.

Was Bill secretly a faggot?

Every time someone brings up homosexuality (College kids calling him a faggot, Girl telling him the hooker had AIDS) Based Kubrick uses light and puts a rainbow into the frame.
Could be that most of the movie is a dream, hence the bright shiny colours and the built New York set, which looks like New York but something is off. Also While walking in new York, Kubrick makes Tom Cruise walk in front of a green screen of new york. It Is pre obvs that Kubrick was subtly trying to make this film as 'dreamy' as possible, not to mention the film is cozy as fuck. This film is more about exploring the sub-conscious, dont take it completely literal, dont follow the story, follow the ideas.
