You say that like it's a bad thing? The franchise was original conceived as having several movies like James Bond, globe trotting, and going on Villain of the Week adventures like the serials that Jones's character was based on. The original script of 4 is actually very good. I have no problem with the overall concept, or the characterizations, but it was butchered. I really do recommend googling the original script. It's actually very easy to visualize the movie in your head. The writing is solid. I was really pissed that the movie left out a great scene with a drunk Jones talking to Marcus Brody's memorial statue about the good old times.
It's my opinion that, relative to the original script, 4 actually ended up brushing over some story points from the series, probably on the assumption that most audiences wouldn't even bother to be familiar with the originals.
