The Waters of Mars (Wallpaper).jpg
347 KB, 1991x1408
What was the ultimate consensus of Waters of Mars?

For me I thought it was a very fun episode to watch with some very cool scenes, but I really think the characterization of The Doctor is so tremendously off. I tend to see the Doctor as being a largely ambivalent guy, he'll aim to do the right thing but at the end of the day Humans will die in very stupid ways and he's not going to beat himself up over it.

The melodramatic end with the Doctor crying over someone committing suicide is so goofy.
>>
>>67782707
>No roundels in the TARDIS
>>67782744
It was all about The Doctor realizing there was no one left to enforce the laws of time. He was sick of seeing good people die, and the realization that he could break the laws of time, and that he essentially owned them, tipped him over the edge
>>
>>67782744
I personally think its a bit overrated desu. It's not awful but there's no build up from the previous episodes for 10 to go mad. It all happens in the span of one episode and it feels kind of forced. With Hell Bent you had Clara Dying and events of Heaven Sent to make him angry.
>>

>>
>>67782744
as much as we roll our eyes at 10 being angsty I do appreciate what RTD was trying to do here. The lonely god finally has enough and crosses the line. He is then bought back down by a single human being. like with Ian in an Unearthly child. It's like pottery

I actually think it should've been his regeneration story - not sure how he would've died though.

>you also have to ignore the fact that the Doctor could've taken the survivors off world somewhere to live out the rest of their lives, since bodies weren't required

Yeah, but 9 hadn't just been told that he was about to die.
The thing about 10 in The Waters of Mars is, he isn't just trying to save the humans, he's also trying to save himself. In the previous episode, he's received yet another prophecy about his own death. But if he can take control of events and changed fixed points, it means he can avert that. When Adelaide kills herself, he's forced to face the fact that he's going to die and there's nothing he can do about it, that's why Ood Sigma is there.

On an unrelated note, one minor thing that I love about The Waters of Mars is the way it uses the news articles from the future to show the audience how the Doctor's actions are influencing history. We've always been told that Time Lords have a special relationship with time and they can sense things and blah blah, but this is, to my knowledge, the only time in the show or the EU that we get a taste of what it feels like. We see the pattern of history changing in the same way the Doctor sees it. That's pretty cool and I hope somebody does something like that again in the future.

I found out recently that Christopher Priest (author of The Prestige) wrote two Doctor Who serials in the 70's/80's that were never produced.

>Sealed Orders
A Tom Baker story set on gallifrey where it seems the Doctor has been given orders to kill Romana

>The Enemy Within
A Peter Davison story about the inside of the TARDIS, where it would have been revealed that the "heart" of the TARDIS was this giant tentacle monster thing that the Doctor is terrified of (and lives off fear)

But most interesting of all, this is what he had to say about JNT:
>and the new producer [John Nathan-Turner] turned out to be an appalling little [censored by original interviewer], who was more interested in being a media star than actually working with a lowly writer like me.

lol

Season 9 is pigshit, especially Day of the Daleks. The big return of the Daleks after five years and they all they do is stand around for a couple of minutes per episode not doing shit and being horribly voice acted.

The Nick Briggs Dalek voices in the special edition are undeniably an improvement so I think the original vs special edition comes down to whether you want to experience the serial as a piece of history or watch something that's actually entertaining. Thing is, the story is still shite even with better Dalek voices so you might as well go for the former.

It's hard to look past the fact that they only have three Daleks also.

That being said, it's the best of the Pertwee Dalek stories. Planet is dull and Death to the Daleks is one of the worst Dalek stories ever. Only Destiny of the Daleks comes close to how shit it is.

S01E06 Dalek is pointless and retconned out of existence. It's since been established the Time Lords and the Daleks can never become extinct. The guy with the artifact collection running the world could never operate without the consent of UNIT. The Doctor says the Daleks killed all the Time Lords. That's not even how he should remember it happening. The show has been slowly rebooted.
>>
>>67797491
it makes 0 sense
>>
>>67799734
It was retconned by the series 4 finale. Dalek is set in 2012 and no one knew what a Dalek was, but the S4 finale was set in 2008 and there was an earth to invasion by Daleks, so they should have known wtf a Dalek was. Like how Adelaide Brooke from Waters of Mars remembered the Daleks' attack.
>>
>>67798391
Honestly. I feel like everybody only takes the special effects into consideration when rating Invasion of the Dinosaurs.

This really annoys me, the idea of the different roles had lots of potential, and there could have been another dalek civil war. At least Into The Dalek and their use in the 50th were pretty good, and they were used almost perfectly in the s9 opener

yeah, I think that was in general a bit of a problem with JNT. The difference between him and, say, Hinchcliff, was that Hinchcliff was a nice guy who was liked by everybody so people were much more likely to do him a favor. Terrance Dicks talks about how he could have vetoed the production of Brain of Morbius because his script was edited beyond recognition but since he was friends with them he didn't want to cause unnecessary trouble. JNT didn't have such luck and in the end he was stuck with the likes of Pip and Jane.

>>67800919
I don't think it was smart to change all Daleks simultaneously but I like the idea of a big Dalek leader with a unique design, towering over his peers and who the Doctor can look directly into the eye.

It's definitely not nearly as bad as its reputation suggests or Moff's worst episode. In fact, since I jumped in at The Eleventh Hour back in 2010 it was one of the first ones I watched and I had a great time.
It suffers from a few quirks of tone and structure (like the whole ending is a little bit dragged out, and the kindly whale twist is played too mushily), but the common complaint that "the world makes no sense if you think about it" seems to miss the point a bit. The world of the episode is just a set of carefully chosen iconography interacting in specific ways to produce certain unique effects for the audience. It's more mythology than sci-fi, the meat is in the act of story/telling/ rather than the structural spotlessness of the wider fictional construct.
I wouldn't downplay the usefulness of carefully thought through settings or internally consistent worlds, and it might well be a better episode had Moffat planned it out more, but I don't necessarily view it as a fatal flaw in a TV Doctor Who episode which has 45 minutes to land in a world and make some kind of point.
>>
>>67804325
I don't think it's a fatal flaw because it's (somehow) easily missed. And when you do miss it the episode is enjoyable enough. But it isn't just a standard plothole, it's so big it renders the plot and world as completely nonsensical.

I do see what you mean but I also don't really see people acknowledging the flaw itself often and so sometimes I feel a bit crazy.
>>
>>67804325
It's not that the world doesn't make sense, it's that, I think, it's littered by stuff that doesn't really make sense. Many moffuckery is like this. I rememember little girl reciting a poem, why is she a thing? No connection to plot, no reason to be in plot.
>>
>>67804419
>I rememember little girl reciting a poem, why is she a thing? No connection to plot, no reason to be in plot.
That's why it's so crazy. We're shown that every single person involved in making the decision to capture the starwhale are deeply remorseful and ashamed about it and the voting system seemed like it was a legitimate attempt at fairness BUT they also made the decision to kill anybody that protests? to feed children that are failing in school to the whale?? someone commissioned a creepy poem to play to the kids while they're trying to klll them???

it's fucking insane when you think about it.
>>
>>67804528
I think it's reasonable to feed people to space monster that gives you life and to give yourself illusion of legitimacy through illusion of choice while also refusing to die for the monster's sake.

But it's littered by crap that doesn't match the story, foreshadowing Moffat's poor revision clean-up or idea filtering skill.

>I think it's reasonable to feed people to space monster that gives you life and to give yourself illusion of legitimacy through illusion of choice while also refusing to die for the monster's sake.
But there's nothing to show that that's what's happening? Every single person in power is crying (sometimes literally) over the awful decision they've made for the greater good. And they set up the whole voting system to give everyone a choice so that you don't have to be complacent in it. Why would they go to all that effort if they were just going to kill anybody that protested? Why fucking tell them about the whale in the first place?

It all works quite well until they reveal the twist. But even then it still somehow works if you don't actually stop and consider the implications of the twist. I don't know. It's a fucking mess but somehow it's a discrete mess. I think it only occurred to me after multiple viewings.
>>
>>67804528
>to feed children that are failing in school to the whale
That's not true. He wouldn't have been fed if he just took the stairs and not the elevator. Plus they knew the whale didn't eat children.

The Beast Below is GOAT.

It wasn't faulty, but he wasn't supposed to take the elevator. His punishment was to take the stairs down to his house, but he disobeyed and took the lift so he got a worse punishment. He wasn't sent to the whale because he failed his test but because he fucking disobeyed the law. And like I said, they knew the whale wouldn't eat him.

Mid twenty-first century, humankind starts creeping off into the stars. It spreads its way through the galaxy to the very edges of the universe and it endures until the end of time. And it does all that because one day in the year 2049 when it stopped thinking about going to the stars, something occurred that made it look up, not down. It looked out there into the blackness and it saw something beautiful, something wonderful, that for once it didn’t want to destroy. And in that one moment the whole course of history was changed. Not bad for a girl from Coal Hill School … and her teacher.
>>
>>67804986
This is a very unique interpretation of events you have.
>>
>>67805243
But it's literally the truth. The robot tells him he's very disappointed and that he'll have to use the stairs. He tells her sister that's like super long and even tries to enter the first lift where there's a guy who looks at him going like "Mate, use the fucking stairs or else". Then he waits for the second lift and goes anyway. I think you should rewatch the episode.
