I feel like long takes are way overused and overvalued, especially the show off-y steadicam ones. The Revenant's big battle would have been much more powerful with some actual staging and editing instead of "and this and this, and now he's in a tree and the guy falls and he turns and gets shot and runs and there's a fire etc." It's excessive and detracts from the emotion

any technique can be good in the proper context. Having said that, these are some generalizations

- gimmicky long takes that directors abuse in order to scream in the audience's face, "THIS IS SERIOUS ARTISTIC FILMMAKING. I AM AN IMPORTANT DIRECTOR" (alfonso)
- abuse of the hand-held camera/sloppy editing to manufacture tension and "realism" by failing to properly film the scene
- unjustified extreme close-ups
- distracting editing wipes
- virtually any use of the fish-eye lens outside of a mid 90s rock music video
- CGI, especially obvious CGI. Movies that rely on CGI tend to age like milk

- pull back dollies, rack focusing
- crane-dolly shots and pans, especially those that track or reflect the motion of some sort of movement in nature like wind or a river flowing
- gorgeous full establishing shots that stretch your pupils
- clever back and forth reaction shots in conversations
