I've always pictured Negan as sounding elated when he get excited and subdue when he is being serious. JDM voice really sounded languid and unethused. Or, like he is playing Negan up as the too cool for this sterotype villain.
When he said "Taking it like a champ" was perfect and he sounded excited, same when he told the Saviors to take out Carl's eye and he'll feed it to Rick, he sounded serious.Those are two perfect examples of Negan switching
