Finally got around to starting The Sopranos - arguably the best show of all time - and so far they've made a point exactly once every episode to have someone ask for/drink a Coke, and it's completely ruining it for me.

It might not seem like a big deal, but this blatant product placement is making the show seem worse than it is and ruining the immersion.

It's a shit show. Don't watch it.
>>
>>67774811

It's pretty good so far, and I usually find Italian mafia stuff really uninteresting.

OP is a faggot and prefers Pepsi.

what are you talking about? TP was Lynch, he did what he did.

Why wouldn't selfish people ask for name brand products?
>>
Sopranos is my favorite show ever, but yeah, I gotta agree with you, pretty infuriating. Just have to try to suppress yourself, after all, you use product names in real life too.
Also not gonna lie, I've tried most of the food and drinks they mention.
Thanks, Chase, some of it was okay.

HBO doesn't allow product placement.

Sorpanos would've been drinking Coke just like the rest of the country

Are Italian-American women actually pretty, like in the show?
Where I live we get swarmed by actual Italian tourists and literally like 90% of the women are these deformed wide-hipped midgets with manly faces.

Give me one thing on the level of Sopranos with Yakuza.
Yeah, that's right, even the best stuff is a bit too artsy and vain compared to Sopranos.

It's worse when AJ is playing Mario Kart 64 and noises that shouldn't be heard are heard. Then after Tony turns off the game, AJ turns it back on and the game is instantly back on a random map.

His dad isn't paying attention so he hits the literal reset button on the console and immediately starts playing again.

Italians are literally masterrace when it comes to looks. Stay mad.
>>
I dunno, it's a regional thing but where I'm from we always just refer to any type of cola as 'coke'. Often as a default if some one wants soft drink we ask "do you want a coke or some thing?"
>>
>>67777479

>resets the level by hitting the reset button on the console
>finishes the course in 10 seconds while playing with one hand

That seems pretty bad, but N64 is the last console I've ever had so maybe I don't catch newer shit.

Sopranos takes place in NJ, not bumfuck Texas or wherever.
>>
I had no problems with the product placement. Makes the show feel more like it takes place in real life. Brands are a large part of the real world.

What is alcohol?
>>
>>67777763
I meant more in the noises are actually from the game, compared to other shows where it's Atari blips and the player is wildly flailing at the controller. Simon Pegg's movies/shows are the only ones I can recall that have actually shown video games as they are.

Fermented sugar water.

Fermentation is literally the process of yeast eating sugar and shitting out CO2 and alcohol.

Worse!

Australia!
>>

>>67774786
That's not actually monetized product placement. They just chose to put actual brand name things in their show. You know, like a reflection of reality or something!

Not sure if you're aware of this, but there are 2 soda companies in this country that account for like 96% of market share. People drink coke IRL.

Also, there's Pepsi products featured as well.

It's not like OP is the first person to notice the brand names in Sopranos.

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/advertising/2002-12-02-sopranos_x.htm

>Commercial-free HBO doesn't pocket a penny from the cars, phones and soft drinks seen in such shows as The Sopranos, Sex and the City and Curb Your Enthusiasm. The 34-million-subscriber pay channel also prohibits paid placements in its original movies.
>"We're not a network that accepts advertising. And product placement is a form of advertising," explains HBO spokesman Jeff Cusson. Adds Ilene Landress, executive producer of HBO: "We could pay for the whole show that way. But we don't."

As a huge nerd about that kinda shit I actually like little details like that, it's a reality of the industry no matter where you look, and product placement is a craft in itself, so there's something to appreciate about all the little tricks they use to hide it.
>>
>>67779354

In The Sopranos it's so heavy handed it's almost like in the Truman Show where the wife has to break character to market whatever product she's making for breakfast.

You can tell even the actors don't take it seriously.
>>
>>67779476
But again, The Sopranos wasn't profiting from the product placement. It's not heavy handed to make money, it was heavy handed to make a point. David Chase was making a show about America, we're product placement, the nation.
>>
>the sopranos was so innovative for including real brand names without explicitly advertising them

Go back and watch Friends. The brand name products in Joey and Chandler's apartment changed almost as often as the picture on their dry erase board, and they were throwing in stuff like Sierra Nevada before craft beer even blew up.
