I remember loving this movie when it first came out. I rewatched it a few years later, after reading up on WW2, and I hated it with a passion.

He was a hero, not a villain.
That being said, I hated the sudden change in his character after the half-wit shot the kid.
Throughout the show, Walt always had a conscience, and even when he did things that you could consider immoral or petty, it could always be partially justified or rationalized.
When the kid was shot, he suddenly didn't care. It was a total change in his character, as that would have had a huge impact on him at any other point in the show.
I think the writers changed what they originally set out to do with the character. Or if they planned to make him evil in the end, they certainly didn't build up to it.
Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass, considering he didn't seem to care that he was indirectly responsible for making two passenger planes crash in the air.
