Why the hell did Vader take commands from some useless admiral in Star Wars 4? Was it ever explained?

Vader was just the Emperor's top henchman in ANH, like Jaws in James Bond. A big guy for you. It was after favorable public reception that made him a top guy.
And Moffs are over Admirals.

more like the nazi guy in Radiers of the Lost Ark, with how he has a high rank but everyone in the Wehrmacht or whatever thinks hes like a weirdo freak
and tarkin is like in charge of a chunk of the empire im assuming because of him being a military 'governor'
Grand Moff is well above Admiralty, answering only to the emperor himself.
So Sheev told vader to do what tarkin says
because george lucas made it up as he went along
He only really commanded vader to not kill a guy he was just messing around with anyway, they're about equals
Grand Moffs have complete command over priority sectors. Tarkin was in command of the Death Star and Vader was on board the death star.
Because Tarkin actually knows shit about running an empire.
Vader is just a dildo with a glow stick that's good at killing people.
That's also why Bright Noa gets to slap around all the Gundam pilots.
Authority.

The canon explanation is that Sheev, Vader and Tarkin were all BFFs with Vader and Tarkin being equals that respected each other and worked together for the good of the Empire

Because that's Peter Cushing, and you listen to what he says.
It's because Tarkin and Sheev were good friends.

Because Star Wars was never written as a trilogy and for a one shot, space fantasy, Vader fills the "Black Knight" role pretty well.
He was Tarkin's hammer. It wasn't until later when more competent writers and film makers made Vader more than what he was.

Because in reality every army has old people giving commands and the young killers just follow orders.
