What is your favourite line from the iconic opening scene of the cult classic Batman: The Dark Knight Rises?
Me, I'd have to go with 'He wasn't alone'. Intially seemingly innocent, the phrase becomes oh so ominous as events unfold. It perfectly sets up the mood for the entire scene.
>>
Mine was 'MAYDAY! MAYDAY!' it points to how CIA and his men were unprepared for the big guy's master plan. It drives a sense of shock and awe to the audience.

Did /bill/ succeed?

There's so many, it's hard to choose from. I guess I'd have to go with "He has no style, he has no grace" when CIA is describing big guy. The crew finds out that he has a funny face.

"SIR"

a single, simple word that completly changes the flow of the scene. it is at this very moment that the control CIA thought he had over the big guy is lost.

I believe "Don't worry, no charge for them" is a subtle critique of the Britsh Empire's mercantilism policy of 18th century.
>>
>Em, you don't get to bring friends *chuckle*

It's actually a very powerful and premonitory line: at this moment, CIA realizes that he isn't in charge anymore. Bringing Pavel's "friends" will also lead to his demise.
>>
So did Bill ever show up yesterday? Or is he just doesnt exist
>>
No love for "FOR YOU"?
So much is conveyed in this short utterance. For. You. Two words yet their effect is profound. The look of bewilderment on CIA's face really compliments this already brilliant exchange. Like a cherry on top of a beautiful cake.
>>
I'd have to go with the classic "you're a big guy" line. The number of possible implications that this line conveys is absolutely mind boggling and is genius-level writing at its finest.
>>
The no charge for them line, its clearly a commentary on the world economics and left vs right economic politics.
>>
Fuck that movie. 5 times I tried to get through it, & 5 times I've fallen asleep.
>>
>Bane?
Pour moi, this line conveys Agent Wilson's apparent disbelief at the presence of the Masketta Man. He is naive in ignoring the threat of Bane's power, and he will ultimately meet his fate upon realising the power of the Big Guy

Finally, another patrician gets it

The plane scene IS the movie. That is a tale in it of itself of a flawed man who refers to himself as "CIA" instead of his own Christian name (setting up a man with a real sense of struggle in terms of his identity) that plunders an important mission due to his own arrogance. All of the little mistakes really start to add up until finally CIA loses complete control

The rest of the film? Filler. It was obvious thst the plane scene was the creative team's true artistic vision but were forced by the studio to tack on a subpar superhero story to its amazing beginning
>>
>No charge for them
Seeing 3 men, their hands cuffed, their face concealed, CIA still finds it necessary to emphasize that they are not in charge around him. CIA is clearly very obsessed with authoritarianism and the feeling of being charge cloud his judgments. This is again highlighted when he says
>Why would I want them?
While the "I'm CIA" line could be misinterpreted as his quirky way of saying "I'm from CIA", this line clearly shows that he's deluded himself into thinking that he IS the agency, and his wish is the rest of the agency's command. He does not refer to other agents before giving them commands, after all, they are not in charge, they do not deserve to be recognized by him who is in charge.

Nolan, with his poetic sense of justice, decided to give CIA the most ironic death. Confronted by a man who has much more charisma than he does, CIA slipped, murmuring, "You're a big guy" - he has given up on being in charge, he's not as big anymore compared to the man standing before him. CIA dies the moment his authority slips away from him.
>>
>>67764703
"Huh". Absolutely a work of art, when the events begin to unfold after the covered man, now known as the masked man, Bane-kun.

"Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man, before throwing him out of a plane."

The ramifications of this line are twofold - one, it halts CIA's immediate course of action and causes him to cease the interrogation of Bane's minions. It cannot be said whether Bane had begun to question the loyalty of his hired guns and feared that one of them would give CIA the information he sought, or he simply knew that the time of his escape was closing in and he did not want to wait for CIA to finish. Regardless, it accomplished his goal.

And two, it caused CIA's attention to be diverted toward Bane. This was setting the stage for the rest of the scene in its entirety, focused solely on the big guy (Bane) and the little guy (CIA). When CIA approaches Bane following this statement, he is standing while Bane is sitting, thus making CIA the big guy and Bane the little guy. However, when he speaks to Bane, he proceeds to kneel, putting them on equal ground. Eventually Bane stands, truly making himself the bigger guy and showing CIA how small he is in the grand scheme of things.

The quote in question is what diverts and centers all the attention to the two guys. Thus I believe it is indeed the most important line in the entire scene.

This line perplexes the average viewer and makes it sound like CIA is changing his plans and welcoming the masketta men on board. In reality he's calling for a special ops agent named "M" because he was bored of everything.

Lastly, he wanted to call another unknown agent named Eten. But for what exactly?

Is nobody going to mention when the shooting starts and one of Bane's minions smacked his head on the side of the plane?
This creates clear connotations of the flawed nature of Bane's master plan. These gunmen are not hellish demons, but simple people serving a cause. We are reminded that they are human and that they have faults in their soul. Thus this is a commentary on humanity, as its actions are obscured by the cracks in our psyche that makes us all human.

>>
My personal favorite moment is the gunshot fired by CIA when interrogating one of the hired guns.

Notice how the gun firing is accomplished purely through the sound, if watched on mute one couldn't tell the gun had fired except by a very subtle movement of CIA's finger.

This is subtle foreshadowing for CIA's loss of power, and how his words are empty, questioning the human condition.

He's actually shooting at God, you see, the entire scene is an existential masterpiece detailing mans troubled connection with God in the 21st century (bravo nolan).

When the scene opens, CIA, having just acquired prisoners (in this case, the supposed "scientific" knowledge that there is no supreme deity) he boards them on his plane and takes off, assuming the new role as God of his own world (that's why he's in the sky). However, once he begins questioning these prisoners he becomes distressed that none of them answer, mimicking how man can never be comforted by science in the way he can be comforted by God. When he shoots out of the plane, he does so out of misguided anger, furious that the scientific knowledge he has coveted for so long has not given him the rest or respite he desires. He shoots at no one, and everyone.

When he gets to his last piece of evidence, in this case the prophet known as Bane, he speaks back. But instead of offering answers he only causes CIA to question more. "If I took that mask off would you die?" Is in fact CIAs attempt to reason with the unreasonable, "It would be extremely painful" is the response meant to convey the pain of having a scientific worldview crash down around you and be replaced by the knowledge that there is a creator. The famous “Big guy” dialogue was written by Nolan to ensure that the viewer understood the delicate juxtaposition between those who claim to preach truth, and those who are actually enlightened. The scene ends when Bane calls his almighty father down from heaven to crash the plane of the heathen (while saving Dr. Pavel for being a believer, but reminding him that the time for fear, in this case hell, comes later on judgement day.)

This scene made me a Christian.

>>
"They expect one of us in the wreckage brother!"

The haste delivery with which bane carries this line complements the entire architecture of the plane scene yet also exists as the first examination into the the complex character which is the masketta man himself.
>>
>Get 'em on board, I'll call it in.

I feel this shows CIA's control over his men and their unquestioning loyalty to him. Let's face it, this is a rather hotheaded action - Letting these random goons on the plane without checking who they are? It calls into question who the figurative big guy is. CIA is definitely the big guy to his men and he wants to be Bane's big guy too.
>>
when the cia agent shakes his head not knowing who the merc is talking about at first
>>
>>67765694

"No charge for them" is also a play on words; these men have been arrested but have been formally charged with no crime. They have been denied their right of habeas corpus.

It is a brilliant directorial choice which flawlessly conveys the moral complexity of the War on Terror and the grey zone in which CIA operates.

This line is purely sublime.

CIA asks "who wants to try next" (at flying good), but then without waiting for an answer he silently gestures at Juan (or Hugh?). He offers the illusion of choice, but his masked captives don't realize the choice has already been made for them. They are like the chained men in the Allegory of the Cave, blind and unaware of the truth of the world, which moves without them.

But CIA himself is unaware that HIS OWN control is illusory, and that he has no choice in the master plan. Ironically, the only one without agency... is the agent.

Aye was the best line. So subtle, and yet so strong there was no need to vocalize to be listened and understood.
It was an internal Aye, a aye for your soul.
A poker play who you, as the viewer, don't know if he is nervous or self-confident.

In the Aye only the most cunning mind could see the betrayal, it was an astonishing act of acting.
The acting was so intense that even if he didn't said it verbally, you can hear it clearly.

It was the first unspoken implied line in movies, a groundbreaking innovation in cinema since the technicolor.

That line goes to show that wreckage brother was willing to die for his beliefs. And more importantly, a higher cause than ones own life. Some say Masketta Man was the most loyal of Bane's disciples; this is overlooking the sheer act of selflessness in which Wreckage Brother offers his life so that the Big Guy and his apostles can carry on.

That line is sweet, with the perfect delivery and all, but it's no close to being a top 10 line and doens't that fact boggle your mind? That there are around twenty fullbonafied historical megaepic lines compressed into thos three (five) minutes of airtime. Oh, how magical Nolan must felt when wrote that masterpiece of a true genious.

Anyway, here's the official top 15 vetoed by /tv/ in a strawpoll in the summer of 2014:
1. Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would shoot a man, before throwing him out of a plane?
2. Dr. Pavel, I'm C.I.A.
3. You're a big guy.
4. Somebody get the hothead outta here.
5. If I pull that off will you die?
6. Lot of loyalty for a hired gun.
7. Uhh...You don't get to bring friends.
8. Well, congratulations! You got yourself caught! Now what's the next step in your master plan?
9. Tell me about Bane, why does he wear the mask?
10. Crashing this plane....WITH NO SURVIVORS.
11. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
12. Nothing. I said nothing.
13. Was getting caught part of your plan?
14. It would be extremely painful.
15. For you.

This. FUCKING THIS.
>Aye
is by far the most important line. It basically stes up Bane as the BIG GUY in the scene. Everything that follows is because of this simple utterance.
>>
>>67771135
Conversely, he is referring to the plane, literally christening it the "Wreckage Brother". The plane is therefore personified as a sort of Noah's Ark, creating connotations with the biblical fables, giving the plane a status as the carrier of Bane's destiny.
>>
>Get them on board, I'll call Ethan.
So mysterious. Who is Ethan? Why does CIA need to consult with him before departing? This scene begs a continuation!
>>
>>67774305
>Get them on board, I'll call Ethan.
I'm afraid you have misinterpreted the line. It is instead:
>Get 'em, I'm bored, I'll call it in.
This signifies the lack of professionalism on CIA's part, presenting him as arrogant and mocking of Bane's threat. This simbolises the plucky agent flying too close to the sun, "calling it in" to meet with fate, a la the doom of Icarus.

Oh, I'd definitely pick:
Dr. Pavel, I'm CIA.
He wasn't alone.
Uh, you don't get to bring friends.
They're not my friends.
Don't worry, no charge for them.
And why would I want them?
They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The Masketta Man.
Bane?
Aye.
Get 'em on board, I'll call it in.
The flight plan I filed with the agency lists me, my men, Dr. Pavel here, but only one of you! First one to talk gets to stay on my aircraft! Who paid you to kidnap Dr. Pavel? He didn't fly so good! Who wants to try next? Tell me about Bane! Why does he wear the mask? Lotta loyalty for a hired gun!
Or perhaps he's wondering why someone should shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.
At least you can talk! Who are you?
It doesn't matter who we are. What matters is our plan. No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.
If I pull that off, will you die?
It would be extremely painful.
You're a big guy.
For you.
Was getting caught part of your plan?
Of course! Dr. Pavel refused our offer in favor of yours. We have to find out what he told you.
Nothing! I said nothing!
Well, you got yourself caught. Now what's the next step of your master plan?
Crashing this plane. With no survivors! No! They expect one of us in the wreckage, brother!
Have we started a fire?
Yes. The fire rises. Calm down Doctor, now is not the time for fear. That comes later.

>"aye"
>"I," as in the first person singular pronoun

>"Bane?"
>"I"

He is actually identifying himself WITH Bane, a double entendre confession of his betrayal to CIA. CIA does not catch this double meaning. Perhaps he does not want to see it?
>>
Even Director Christopher Nolan wasn't safe from Aidan's twisted vision.

> "I heard weird sounds coming from his trailer," Nolan confessed. Looking through a window he saw Aidan furiously copulating with a prostitute while exclaiming "I'M ON BOARD, CALL ME IN BABY," before climaxing over the woman and shoving her to the ground, putting a pistol to her head and interrogating her. He was never seen on set without his miniature plane hat. "Whenver he talked to me he'd flex his neck muscles really hard."

> "CIA slowly became Aidan", Nolan claimed. "He would not use the screen name we gave him which was Bill Wilson. He'd dub himself CIA and would ignore our attempts to correct him. One time he threatened me, saying how a big guy could snap my neck like it was a bundle of sticks."

> The final straw came when Aidan was found breaking into Tom Hardy's trailer, tying him up and boiling him in a cauldron of hot water while chanting "OOOHOOHOO, BIG GUY FOR YOU." Nolan cut Aidan's scenes to just the intro but says he has not slept well since and keeps hearing planes during the night frequently even though he does not live near an airfield.

What makes CIA so fascinating is that we only know how he died, not how he lived. Nolan invites us to construct his character from the manner of his death alone, and asks us the question: do we truly know a man better for having known him his entire life, or are our lives defined by their end?

My favourite scene was in the battle between Batman and Bane when the lights go out and Bane says: "You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it, molded by it, by the time I saw the light I was already a man and it was nothing to me by blinding."
Your ordinary person would think that Bane is refering to the fact that the lights went down, but I, with my greater intellect, recognize the true meaning behind Bane's words. The darkness symbolizes Bane's mother. He thinks that Batman is his father, hence the "you adopted the dark". So for Bane, this is not merely an action to cause chaos in the city, but a fight against his alleged father Batman. If my assumption is right, the entire movie was about Bane growing up and becoming independent.

It's been so long since I've had the chance to talk to you. I've got to get Smee, Maymen, Dr Pavelheer, Button Lee, Juan O'veu on the plane so again I will only have a short amount of time to speak to you but I will cherish and hang on every word you say. Listen, I miss you Ittin. I promised to call you and I did, even if again our conversation has to be fleeting. Rest assured though, my love is not. I think about you every day. I know you've suspected me of exchanging flight plans with smaller guys, but trust me, that's not the type of guy I am. I need you. I want you. Only you. There is no bigger guy for me than you. Tell me... What are you wearing? I fear this plane might be the last I board - I know it's a terrible thing to say, but...

Anyway, can you just tell me what you're wearing, Ittin? Please...

Fools, the lot of you. The plane scene was brilliant- nobody can refute that. However, you are all missing the forest while you are admiring that one tree. The rest of it was filler? Utter tosh, did none of you notice the poetry in the climax? The film begins with the Big Guy crashing a plane with no survivors. The climax shows a plane being crashed with no loss of life. The way the story comes a full circle at that point is the true underlying lesson in that film. Redemption, and the path to it signified by the climb one must make after reaching rock bottom. This status of having reached rock bottom, portrayed by the prison being carved into a rock's bottom, and Bruce climbing out of it with nothing but his faith as a harness and then going on to crash a plane with everyone surviving is the masterstroke that made this Nolan film his best yet.

The plane scene is all symbolism, it represents the battle between the forces of heaven and Hell.
Think about it
Bane is a synonym for adversary, and guess who's name translates to The Adversary?

When CIA brought Dr. Pavel, he was trying to get him to heaven, or "on board".
When Mosquito Man brought the other members, CIA (obviously representing St Peter) initially refused them, but Mosquito Man reminded him that he has a duty to redeem them, stating they work for Bane (Satan)

When CIA says "first one to talk gets to stay on my aircraft" he's actually trying to get them to repent their sins, and "lotta loyalty for a hired gun" refers to the fact that Satan only considers them to be puppets, not real people (as further demonstrated when Bane leaves one behind)

The symbolism continues. Bane says it doesn't matter who he is, which is obviously a reference that evil is evil, regardless of the man behind it. Bane's reliance on his mask is a symbol of his eternal curse for his desertion, as it would be extremely painful if he had to face up to what he did, though Bane is quick to remind CIA that he isn't a big guy compared to those such as Michael.

The "Plane crash" and Dr Pavel being snatched are symbolic of Dr. Pavel deciding to give in to temptation and join the league of shadows.

The symbolism becomes obvious when Batman, obviously a representation of Jesus, sacrifices an aspect of his being to save others, but lives on in another form.

It truly is poetry.
