Actually, the reason I liked him as a character was the sharp contrast between his and Matt's methods for dealing with the criminality, especially because the writers put a lot of work into making it easy to agree with him. But Frank is at his scariest when his rage manifests in silent, lethal certainty, when an angry Frank means you're going to get a bullet in the head from a sniper rifle when you're out to the shops at best, and get your knee caps blown off from the other side of the door to your apartment at worst. This interpretation felt a little too human, emotional and unhinged. Tom Jane's Frank in 2004 was an origin story too and it conveyed the character better, in my opinion.
I thought Bernthal's performance is top notch regardless of script, though. Some of the action scenes, like the first fight scene with Daredevil, were also pretty great.
