My old kick-boxing istructor would teach us that if we really wanted to do MMA for whatever reason we should first do 2 years of boxing, 2 years of Judo or Sambo and then continue do them if we really wanted to be good at it.
For defense however Boxing it's the best, it teaches you spacing, defending from hits to the head which are the most common on the street and also gives you the best footwork.
MMA and trying to go on the ground in a street brawl with more than two people involved is a suicide and you only risk to get a kick to the head while you're trying to get the high ground, and that's if you're not in some shit place where people carry knives.
If I were American though I'd simply bring a gun with me considering you can kill people in self-defense and get away scot-free.

Mike Tyson was a heavy weight champion prize fighter, he literally fought people as his job and was world renowned for his ferocity and skill
Bruce Lee was an extremely proficient martial artist and basically made kung fu popular in the western world. He was heralded for his extreme levels of devotion to his fitness and has basically immortalized in the world of martial arts.
HOWEVER, Bruce's professional fighting record is 0. He never officially fought off camera and in the end is basically just a glorified stuntman.
Bruce himself said he would lose to Muhammad Ali, and Tyson was arguable even a better fighter.
