Am I the only one who genuinely cannot tell good woman acting from bad one?
I mean, when it comes to men, good performances are usually easily distinguishable from bad ones, but with women its either a laughably terrible performance, or 'umm, okay, you said lines and made faces, good job' kinda reaction

So I know this is shitpost day, but the serious answer is: the shitty (if you're a woman) reality is that the roles women get the chance to play are either the man role in the film or the token girl character. If they are the lead role, ie the story is about them, then it's a toss up if they will be a good actress or not because most of the time women are cast for looks and not talent. If you're over the age of 40 and getting lead roles in film as a woman, you're talented. No discussion. Because women are often cast for looks, even and especially in lead roles, the end results in, as you say, a laughably terrible performance.
On the other hand, most women do not get to play lead roles. They are relegated to the token girl character, where all they get to do is, as you say, say lines and make faces. A recent example that comes to mind, because I saw the movie like last week, was Marisa Tomei in The Big Short. She's literally an Academy Award Winning Actress, but she had two scenes (on of which she spoke no lines) and was only there to be Steve Carrell's wife. That's just how it is for women in the industry.
I know we like to be misogynists on here, I mean I definitely do so I'm not judging, but the shitty reality is that there really are comparatively few roles for women on screen. You have to do theater as a woman to play complex characters, and even then you have to be lucky and the right age.

Honestly, it's better than the generic Oscar bait roles that women usually go after. Always seems like ti's some girl who plays a wife that cries for most of the movie.
Gimme a Mark or Luke
anyone can act. there's different degrees of depth of skill (pretty much can you cry or tap into specific emotional responses, not hard if you're actually a human) and really it's all about learning to work in front of camera or an audience, knowing your spots and how you move etc. 90% of that can be taught on the spot on a production set as long as you're not absolutely brain dead.

Agree that anyone can act, completely disagree with the rest of your post. The first thing that any decent actor will tell you is you never play the emotion, you play the intent behind the emotion. A good director would never tell his actor to "be sad", he would foster an environment where the actor knows everything about what his character is doing and why he is doing it, so that he can truthfully react in the situations presented to him. This is what creates a truly moving and believable performance, and takes quite a bit of time to master. But, as you say, any human being can learn, it's just not as easy as everyone assumes it is.

>They are relegated to the token girl character, where all they get to do is, as you say, say lines and make faces. A recent example that comes to mind, because I saw the movie like last week
I think this has to do with the limited range most female actresses are capable of. Not that they are bad actors or undeserving of roles, but that they tend to much more then men play all their roles exactly the same. Even when the roles requires for them be somewhat manic, eccentric, or just flat out crazy. A lot fewer award winning actresses are capable of doing so compared to men.
Charlize Theron is an actress I feel can play just about any role given to her. Marisa Tomei as well, but I haven't seen enough of her work to say for sure. When award winning women get panned for a role, most of the time it's because she's playing a role unlike something she's used to doing.

>>67733401

>>67747801
You're flipping the symptom and the cause. They play all their roles exactly the same because all roles created for women ARE exactly the same. If they're not just 'the girl', they have to be the inspiring woman battling against the odds to do X for her family/love/women's rights, whatever.
Very few actresses get the chance to experiment outside of those boundaries. I agree that Charlize is very talented, as are most actresses that are older but still get work (Helen, Meryll, Judy).
Again, I repeat, we see many terrible performances by women because they are cast on looks not talent. Saying that men are inherently better actors than women is not only untrue, but also doesn't make much sense. Women are traditionally the more emotional sex, and should be considered better at accessing those emotions. Very few women get the chance to perform truly 3 dimensional characters.
>>67747801
I almost think they're directed that way half the time. Like people think that audiences don't want to see female characters have the same range of looks, flaws, and roles as male characters.

Not always. When they is an a assemble cast with eccentric characters, you can still see where the women fall flat when performing their roles. Again, not to say every male actor is always better.
>men are inherently better actors than women is not only untrue, but also doesn't make much sense
> Women are traditionally the more emotional sex, and should be considered better at accessing those emotions
Choose one and only one. Men and women are equally capable of doing anything or one sex can be better at doing something then the other sex.
>>67748056
I think you nailed it. I remember reading an interview where Jennifer Jason Leigh said that a lot of roles for women are basically to prove that the male lead is heterosexual, which she rarely plays.

I am by no means saying she's bad. But acting is SO much more than just crying or displaying emotion for a scene. Delivery of lines is something that has to be practiced and honed to a T if you want to be professional. You need believable pauses and consistent characterization throughout the movie/play.
Anyone have thoughts about it's always sunny getting renewed for another 2 seasons?

this is funny but the actual scene was really good. People just it was bad acting in the months before release because of the awful trailer, where he looks like he is mad immediately after being confused.

wew lad...this statement is literally "I get my opinions taught to me and don't form them myself by assessing the world around me with my own eyes": the statement.
Women are the more FREQUENTLY emotional sex. But they do not experience emotion to the same DEPTH that men do. Period. That's why the great male actors have no female equivalents on their level. Women don't really "feel" shit compared to what men are capable of feeling.
