One thing i've always hated is the ambiguous numbers of troops / losses / reinforcements they undergo in this show. I get that they lost bad here, but i don't really know what scale to which they lost. And i always got the vibe that after losing the mercenaries lent to Mercia and after the destruction of the settlement in Wessex that they should be weakened, but bam next season they've got enough to clog the rivers with their dead in france.
Now they lost what looked like 1/3rd of their forces in this episode and they've still got like 13 episodes left in the season, presumably most of that is going to be fighting.
Losses don't matter and i can't feel tension if they have an unlimited supply of dudes every fucking episode.

I didn't get that battle scene. It was just mindblowingly poorly made.
First of all, why try to bypass the towers? If they succeeded, they would still have to deal with being flanked by a large group of Frenchmen when attacking Paris.
Second, why sail through an obvious trap, knowing it's been built by Rollo to counter them?
Third, why did they send the ambushers to attack the tower through an open marsh in clear view of the tower? Both towers were completely surrounded by forest, which would not only have allowed them to sneak up on the towers unnoticed, it would also have provided cover, rendering the crossbows useless. They would also have discovered the flanking crossbowmen and slaughtered them.
They really didn't think this shit through. Simply attacking the towers on foot, or starving them out through a siege, would have won the day. It's already been firmly established that the vikings have the edge in ground combat, so they wouldn't really face any resistance if they stay out of the towers' range.
