here's my 2 cents folks. this is a visually stunning movie. honestly, I loved all the shots that weren't as subtle as this because it was great iconography. That metaphor doesn't work at all.
Shortly thereafter, when Batman is throwing Superman down the stairwell, some of the graffiti reads "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes", or "Who watches the watchmen?".
A reference to Snyder's previous movie itself, of course, but that same question is the front-and-center plot point of Batman's issue with Superman; to whom does Superman answer? Finch wanted it to be to America, but in a positive way. Luthor wanted it to be himself because he despises anyone with power.

Another image that calls to mind the classics but has none of the context or emotion that makes those scenes powerful. How is Lois supposed to be the Virgin Mary? It's completely wrong to replace her motherly compassion with romantic love because it destroys the pieta of the Sorrows of the Virgin. Seriously, if you really want to play the game, go ahead and type up your reply before you compare it to my spoilered analysis:He looks down on a family that painted his people's symbol for hope, his symbol, what he's trying to find a way to stand for, when a simple "HELP" would have sufficed. Now that he's arrived, they don't cheer, they don't wave, they merely reach out in supplication, turning his symbol into part of some sort of magickal incantation, then simply waiting on the man in the sky to save them. People comment on how dour this Superman seems but overlook the fact that he has genuine reasons to be concerned. He's a polarizing figure - he's either hated or revered, never simply accepted as a one of the very people he hopes to inspire. He's still looking for a way to change people's perception of him. He looks like a god, he has the powers of a god, but he's neither a god nor wishes to be.

I just started watching The Wire after seeing how highly recommended it is on here. I'm one season 1 and I noticed something. In the scene when DeAngelo is teaching the younger kids how to play chess, he is really saying that THEY are the pawns!
I didn't notice it at first and I had to go back and watch it a couple more times to make sure, but I think thats what was happening. What a brilliant fucking metaphor.
I haven't seen the whole series yet, but I can already tell this is the best show ever made. The writing is amazing. The way they slip in such subtle metaphors is just based.
The acting is phenomenal too. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.

i explained what i saw and what the movie was saying and got almost no straight answers as to what should be shown on screen
what little straight answers i got expressed a desire for a sort of personal guardian angel represented on screen, which affirms what the movie did even more, which is affirmed again by the posts above
the disconnect between the online shit throwing and what i saw in theater was at once surprising and not surprising
now a little further,i take the symbolism to not only be relevant within the logic of the movie but to reality itself. the broken metaphor/literal line for the viewer along with hyperrealist fantasy represented visually by materialization of inner space for the characters in the scene in a dreamy visual spectacle is a vision that the viewer of the movie is presented with. i take the 'look around you' and the fact that its framed directly to the viewer as further proof of this

For me, it always revolves back around to Jor-El's metaphoric "place in the sun." I do like that there's a dual meaning to be found in the exhortation to "look around you." Is his monument the city that remains or the change in the hearts of the people? Lex can flip all the paintings he wants and see nothing but demons above his head, but his failure to look for the Angels around him speaks to the flaws in his world view.
