Wait, so why the fuck can Vision pick up Thor's hammer? I thought the whole point of the first Thor movie was that you had to prove your worth as a hero to be able to wield it. Vision was just born 5 seconds ago.He hasn't done fucking anything. Why the fuck should we be invested in the lore of a shared universe if it gets thrown out the window the second they want to make a fucking quip. Are we just supposed to go "ooh cool" and not think about it? This is insulting.
>>
You don't have to prove your worth, you just have to be worthy period.

He's literally the mind stone. I'd say that makes him insta-worthy.

as for the retards with the whole elevator thing, the hammer itself is basically weightless. it judges anyone who tries to pick it up. that's why when it was in the helicarrier in Avengers it didn't create a fucking hole on the floor of it. or in AoU, when they were all trying to pick it off the table, did the hammer fuck up the table it was on? no.

But Thor didn't put the Mjolnir on the Vision. If his artificial nature played a role, he'd have no more been able to lift it than SHIELD's crane in the first Thor movie.

Personally, I think it was a cheap move. The first non-Thor to lift Mjolnir should have been Cap.
>>
>>67695355

He is worthy.

He is more intellectually evolved than another being on the planet while having the innocence of a new born. Later on he explains to Intern how he believes humanity to be doomed as well but sees their struggle to survive as something to admire and feels privileged to stand alongside them.

He is a cosmic being with no red on his ledger yet he is vastly intelligent and likes fighting for lost causes, how in the fuck is that not worthy?

Of all the things Whedon got wrong, the Vision is not one of them.
>>

>>
>>67695355

>>
A being can lift Mjolnir if and only if he is worthy (according to some Odinian or Asgardian standards) of lifting Mjolnir.

Vision lifted Mjolnir.

Therefore, Vision must be worthy.

You don't have to 'prove' your worth to lift the hammer the same way Link needs to collect three pendants of virtue to prove his worth to lift the master sword. You're worthy or you aren't. If you aren't, you can become a better person to be worthy (like Thor did in the first movie).
>>
>>67696768
But if he's walking software, isn't that still an android? But regardless, that wouldn't mean he couldn't be part of the gang anyway.

Maybe it just depends on how you define the terms, and there's no real answer.
>>
>>67697171

Yeah, he need to be taught a lesson to prove his worthiness.

The Vision did not.
>>
>>67697190
Yes. Worthiness is poorly defined. In reality, worthiness is a plot device allowing Thor's weapon to be uniquely his with very few exceptions. The hammer chooses worthy lifters based on the god of the universe (who are the writers).

There's no in-universe definition or consistent explanation. You're either worthy or you're not, and very few people are worthy.
>>
Cap wiggled thors hammer.

Did he purposely not pick it up to save thor and the team ego?
>>
>>67695355
It's probably because of the infinity stone thing.

Also at that time he had just been created, so he was still "pure".
>>
>>67695421
Is your husbando Thor?
Iirc in the comic he turns him into ice and then smashes him with his own hammer.
>>
>>67697264

I believe so, it sounds like Cap.

After he returns from the dead in Infinity War he will probably lift it in a way that shows he knew he could.

Vision. Is he gonna pull a Prometheus and rip the gem out of his head?
>>
>>67695355
I think you can either interpret is Vision just being automatically good and worthy, which is pretty dumb, or you can look at it as BECAUSE he's only born five seconds ago, he has no corruption in him and is completely pure.

That's only if you really want to fish for justification, though. I also thought it was pretty dumb.

I loved how it wiggled though when Captain tried to lift it.

I thought it was because Thor used his lightning to finish making Vision. Either because Thor thought Vision was worth giving life to, Vision is worthy by proxy or Vision is essentially a piece of Thor, who himself is worthy to lift his hammer.

That's cool, but it isn't going to happen in the Disney Cinematic Quippeverse. My guess, if they hit that story beat at all, Thor will just get frozen until it's convenient to unfreeze him. Just like neither Tony or Cap will die, they'll just get put into an lolcoma like Happy in Iron Man 3.
>>
>>67697153
Theory: You couldn't pick up the table. The hammer is in place. But you might be able to slide the table out from under it. You'd destroy the table of course, but it works.

I bet the hammer would just float in midair. Maybe the hammer would know you are trying to move it without being worthy, so whatever it has to do to prevent you from moving it, it does.
>So you slide the table from under the hammer= hammer slides too.
>You destroy the table=Hammer falls to the floor.
>You vaporize the floor= Hammer floats in midair.
>You try to move the floating hammer= You get Norse cancer and die.

Vision is pure. The one plot in AoU that actually worked was the whole Tony accidentally making a genocidal monster and that genocidal monster accidentally making a robot jesus.

This. Like Tony's first attempts to make the Iron Man suit. A whole 3 minute montage of them fucking with Mjolnir. And then at the very end, Thor is bellowing with laughter, and the hammer just flies from off-screen and busts him in the face. The Avengers choose to no longer fuck with THE HAMMER.

Different poster but as far as science-fiction goes there are distinctions between otherwise near-synonymous classifications like robot, android, cyborg, etc.

Cyborg stands for cybernetic organism, and is a hybrid or biological and technological components. This can be a tech-enhanced person, like Robocop, or a bio-enhanced machine, like the Terminator.

Androids are artificial intelligences that usually resemble human beings, and are generally able to think for themselves. C3PO is an android. Vision is another example.

Robots (again, as far as science-fiction goes) are slaves to their programming. They are not sentient and while they may have the illusion of free will they most certainly do not.

Guess what? Humans, at the most fundamental levels, are electro-mechanical machines guided by programming and electronic circuitry.

2: Vision was brought to life by lightning FROM Mjolnir.
3: Vision is the Mind Gem.

is that why vision could lift the hammer? cos he is blank?

That's the problem when you write a character around a single character flaw and have his movie be about overcoming that flaw. It's why sequels to many stories don't work.

Oh god don't link that comic. Thanos is literally a fedora in it and is getting cucked by death and tries to out edgy her (yes death is personified and it's thanos' waifu).

Joe Sweden's entire motivation for doing Avengers was to put Vision, his comic husbando, on screen. He doesn't really like Cap because he's old fashioned, but at least he has the decency to give him some moments to shine.

It's why Vision is pretty much perfect at everything and the one who raises the hammer.
>>
>>67695355
>Vision was just born 5 seconds ago. He hasn't done fucking anything.

That's the point-- he's fresh, innocent, and naive and above all wants peace and justice. How is that not worthy?

i wonder why people even bother writing fantasy books anymore. it should all be SF and wizards should have lab coats on while they throw fireballs

Because Asgardians are a race of proud, powerful alien gods that are based on viking-type culture of conquer, pillage, and fight? Captain America fits your definition of worthy, too.

a lot of people think the hammer can only be held by the most righteous person ever, a true paragon of justice, real king arthur shit

truth is the only criteria for lifting the hammer is if Odin would think you're a cool guy, basically. So in a nutshell you have to do shit that would impress Odin, like being a brave warrior

Like the Avengers, we are skeptical that this newborn magic android man is as pure hearted as he seems. The Vision picking up the hammer tells them and us that, according to Mjolnir's judgey space magic, he's a legit heroic dude, even more so than Cap who (for a mortal) is surprisingly close to a god in terms of heroism.
