What does everyone think about this episode?

American and Star Trek here.

What is the possibility that I would actually like Doctor Who?

It comes on BBC America HD™ sometimes and I can record it but I need to understand if it would fulfill that part of sci-fi that Trek does.

Good opinions between 2-4 sentences please, no complex words meant to strengthen the series.
>>
>>67687857
It's not hard sci-fi by any means if that's what you're looking for. It's closer to fantasy and drama viewed through a sci-fi lense.
>>
>>67687857
Fellow american and trek fag here. I enjoy both, albeit for different reasons. Start with series 5 ep 1 the 11th hour. If you like that, progress forward.
Doctor who is more "fun".

>>
>>67687947
This was my impression, but I was more leaning towards Dr. Who as a new series to watch because it has a long history and it's more intended to fulfill a need for a good storyline as opposed to wowing the eyes.

>>67688034
You could also start with the classic series, if you like .
The black and white era has many episodes missing unfortunately. I wouldn't recommend you start from there if you're completely new to the show. A good place to start would be the first serial of the Third Doctor's era, Spearhead from Space (season 7, episode 1). It's from 1970.
>>
>>67688113
This desu. I haven't seen much Star Trek but I did see an episode where a teleporter malfunction splits Kirk into good and evil versions of himself. Anyone who says ST is hard scifi can fark off.
>>
>>67688113
Who is reeeeally not Hard Sci-fi, it's actually a Sci-Fi fantasy show.

>>
>>67688181
I know, I'm just saying that you'd really struggle to find any mainstream sci-fi which is in any way 'hard' sci-fi.
>>
>>67688034
It scratches my scifi itch and it's not like you'll run out of content like ever. Id say it's less cerebral than star trek or more family oriented and it tells an entertaining story with a gooey moralistic center. Anyway, hope you view and enjoy it.

Doctor Who can be pretty hit or miss. Some episodes are amazing and others can be laughably bad. I've never seen Trek so dunno if its similar in that regard. Also BBC America cuts out scenes on repeats so imo it's not worth watching on there.

Some starting points if you want to get to it.

>Spearhead from Space (Only Classic Who done on film, bluray looks great and it's a good episode)
>Rose (Don't really recommend this one at all, it's not a very good episode and seems to put people off the show. The other episodes afterwards aren't much better desu)
>Eleventh Hour (Very good episode and has worked pretty well at introducing people to the show in the past)
>Deep Breath (Might be confusing if you've never seen the show before, it's a good episode though)
>>
>>67688034
>>67688173
Don't listen to this faggot, if you're going to watch Classic Who start at the beginning. You can skip the missing eps if you want or watch the reconstructions but the First Doctor is fucking GOAT.

I never said he wasn't, Hartnell is my favorite Doctor in fact.
It's just a bad place to start for new fans. Most people aren't used to watching black and white, add missing episodes to that and well, it really doesn't make for an easy jumping-off point.
He can always go back to the Sixties later, when he's more familiar with the show.

It's a step below those shitty youtube commentary videos. Why would I want to read a play-by-play of some random faggots watching Doctor Who? They're not saying anything particularly insightful or interesting or original as far as I can tell and the fact that it's published in Doctor Who Magazine means there's probably at least a little pressure on them not to shit on the show too much. The fact that it's written in standard prose rather than something more readable like Wife in Space's format makes it even more dull.

Based commie Malcom Hulke does it again. What a fantastic story, one of the best of the Pertwee era. Its premise that a large mining operation and a small colony can't exist on the same planet is kind of silly (after all, Earth has a quite a lot of mining) and the attempt to scare the colonists off with faking monster attacks is a bit Scooby Doo, but the side characters are some of the most compelling of the classic series. I especially felt for the guy who works for the evil mining company but is actually only a little bit bad and is therefore conflicted over whether to throw away his career by opposing his boss or allow the colonists to be murdered. That alone is more of an interesting internal conflict than anything that had ever been in Doctor Who before. In fact I don't think the show had ever had someone who was "only a little bit evil" before, who'd bribe government officials and run people off their property but draws the line at violence. There's also the conflict among the colonists over whether to fight the mining company legally or violently, which is basically the same thing we saw in The Krotons but it's done better here.

I mean it's not The Sopranos, but seeing a bit of nuance for once helps ease the feeling that I get from a lot of the Pertwee era, especially when the Master's around, that I'm watching something exclusively for young children. That said, this story also has some of the best Doctor/Master interaction ever, especially the scene in which the Master tries to get the Doctor to rule the galaxy with him using the Doomsday weapon, which has been ripped off no fewer than two times in the new series (The End of Time and Death in Heaven). Also, by god is it good to see the Doctor leaving Earth again. Seriously, fuck the Earthbound format right up the ass.

>>67687379
Either you haven't watched much Doctor Who or you have some shit taste m8.
>>
>>67700947
I also like that the story uses realistic guns. It's set far enough in the future that they could have just used pew pew laser rifles, but having real guns gives it a more gritty feel that counteracts things like the silly, War Machine-esque robot and ties in with the social realism of the story. This serial also starts off one of the more interesting things in the Pertwee era that's rarely seen in Doctor Who and that's consistent world building with respect to humanity's future. Of course, it's very pessimistic. In keeping with the environmentalist themes of the era, future Earth is an overpopulated, overpolluted dystopia and the government are none too good either. It's very different from the optimistic futures of the Hartnell and Troughton eras but it fits the stories well.

Is he easily the actor who was into Doctor Who the most before he started working on the show? I mean no disrespect to Capaldi, who's great and cares deeply about the show, but Tennant makes even him look like a casual.
It's a strange sort of pottery that the Doctor with the most casual fans is the most hardcore fan.

Capaldi is full autismo when it comes to DW. Even had a autograph of hartnell from billy's wife along with other memorabilia, that he gave a viking funeral. Sure, he bounced when bland 5 came along, but /who/ could blame him really?
>>
>>67704697
Yeah, but by Capaldi's own admission as you said he burnt all of that memorabilia in a bonfire as a teenager and stopped watching the show but he said it was in the later Tom Baker years, before Tom regenerated. He only watched Caves of Androzani for the first time while filming series 8, one of the most popular and well regarded classic stories. Tennant was still a fanboy during the wilderness years and listens to the fucking audios. I might prefer Capaldi as an actor and as the Doctor but I can admit Tennant is definitely is a bigger nerd about it.

Makes sense. The first 4 to play the Doctor weren't fans, it's not like that's a requirement to be great in the role. Peter Davison was the first Doctor to be cast that was a fan of the show beforehand and it didn't make him better than the previous Doctors.

Rewatching Parting of the Ways, why didn't the Time Lords do their own Bad Wolf thing and use the Time Vortex as a weapon during the war.

Sacrifice like one regeneration per Time Lord (as you pass on the power so you can keep on assaulting Daleks and whatever else) and you have godlike powers allowing you to wipe out whole fleets like nothing. And all you need to do is look into the Heart of a Tardis
>>
I think the only Doctors who were fans of the show before being cast in it were Davison, Colin Baker, Tennant and Capaldi.
>>
capaldi is a fan in a healthy way.
he watched it growing up and was a superfan then moved on to other things entering adulthood, but still had fond memories. he started watching it again with his family when it came back with eccleston. he's not obsessed with all the minutiae (despite being a big pertwee fan he didn't get the miniscope reference in robot of sherwood, and I once heard him say 'metebelis 4' in an interview) but he loves the ideas behind the show and the potential it holds.

>hung up on an interview

The guidelines about not bringing up Doctor Who during that interview were made clear from the beginning and the interviewer thought they could be cheeky-cute and slip one or two in and get away with it.. and fully support Eccles/his agent for hanging up.

I think Eccleston up there with Pertwee and Capaldi in doing stuff for the fans:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtV1TgcexKE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulxRmR5eNYA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrGcGoprCT4

Even better is the fact that the rare occasion he's done Doctor Who related type stuff post his era is pretty much never for his own profit or anything like that.

He's honestly a real sweet guy, the kind of person you'd want for an uncle.

The first couple of episodes are a bit slow and boring, mostly building the setting, with the obligatory "someone gets attacked" cliffhanger, then shit really hits the fan around episode 3/4, it gets really good, and it all gets resolved in an episode or two, perhaps a little too quickly.

Which serial am I talking about?

The Doctor implies that a Time Lord with that much power wouldn't be a good thing, they'd probably go power-mad.
>If a Time Lord did that, he'd become a god. A vengeful god. But she was human.
A power-mad Time Lord with the abilities of a god isn't something that bears thinking about. They could do even more damage than the Daleks, it'd be a case of the solution being worse than the problem.
